Quick Scroll AIIMS /AIPGE SECRETS ?? --SUBRA 12.02.06 (1 year ago) #1

hiiiiiii, buddies.. sorry for late reply… since many are aiming for AIPGE which is hardly 40 d more, I am forced to post my experiences ( ?secrets) in preparing for PG.
I am giving a detailed picture which may not be useful for all, but it helps u to access what u need!

At the outset , those who are at the verge of exams , plz don’t take too much advice. Already u ve prepared and confident. Keep going with that. It s not beneficial to change ur strategy at this crucial moment. Just take few words of confi and support from ur wellwisher and pray to almighty. That s it..

I ll stick to aims and AIPGE . For all purposes, preparation for both remains the same.

WHAT TO READ ? 1 st Q arising in everyone.

Types
1.mcqs + explan
2. only mcqs
3. notes n high yield books.
4. text books

1. mcqs with explan.

Most useful—mudit and ashish.
Read atleast thrice.
First time—read thorough going thro all referen.
Second---read only explan ( assuming u ve mastered references)
Third—read only import that u ve underlined or highlighted.

U believe it or not—it s possible to get decent rank just with this alone..but u should ve gone thro referen given there.

2. only mcqs type of books.

Lot r available . Both pulse and cross are equally good . read after u ve mastered subjects, so that u can identify errors. U can assess urself.

3. high yield notes.

For small subjects.
Paras and ramgopal are acceptable. SARP series has lot of errors, so difficu for first time users

4. text books.

I am anti text book community.
They r for ur knowledge.. u cant ans entrance Q with these.
U can use to read chapters of which u know nothing. Otherwise they r useful only to understand difficult parts.

5. Accessories--- if u think u r well versed with all these , u can go for PRETEST. In the recent past , lot of q were repeated from this. But at present it not so..but still they r useful to improve ur understanding, guessing skills and to get edge over others.. once u ve mastered main subjects u can go through ramgopal, ROAMS . they give details in nutshell, that ll be useful to recollect things that u ve learned here and there.

Apart from these,
Notes of various coaching classes are useful . don’t read many. Stick on to one..

6. Mock tests
These r very crucial to assess ur ongoing perform. Don’t miss those for want of time. Write as many possible.

Now I think it s enough of general suggestions..

I ll go subjectwise

Recommended books
Those with * -- I didn’t read any separately.

1. Anatomy --*

2. Physio—ganong is a must. No other go.

3. Biochem---
Genetics, proteins n amino, enzymes, electron transport. – harper
DNA, RNA, metabolic cycles- -lipincott
Since it s bit difficult subj. it s worth going thro. Pretest.

4. Forensic --*

5. Micro—anantanarayanan—easily readable. concentrate on morpho, biochemical, any typical feat.( if u ve read infection in harrison that s enough)

6. Path—go thro. Inflamm, necrosis, immunology. Neoplasm, staining in general path of robbins
Systemic path is not very useful..

7. Pharm—diffi to read KDT and remember.. go for high yield notes.. read Harrison table on adverse effects.

8. SPM—no way.. park is essential. Browse thro net for recent facts . 3 or 4 Q are asked every year.( WHO website)

9. Ophthal—either basak or khurana.parson only for reference.
If time permits go for kanski.

10.ENT —easily scorable. Dhingra s enough.

11. Medicine—harrison- to read or not??
Harri – it s better if u ve started in ur final yr.
Otherwise it s diffi.. read importa topics like heart, nephro, neuro, hematol,AIDS etc

12.Surgery.—easily scorable—bailey, short cases das
Time permits- Schwartz pretest

13.OG—again scoring subj.
Dutta and shaw are enough
Ref Williams for controve like contrain of breast feed, IUCD, OCP,etc

14.Pediat—ghai
But Q are taken directly from nelson mostly.
It s worth going thro. Topics like hypospadia, undescen testis, cleft lip, PEM, vesi uret ref, development, jaundice, neonatal hepati etc..

15. Biostatis—no need to read separately. Go thro harrison 1 st chapter.
Spm pretest is very useful..

16. Anaes and radio—small ramgopal.
I was sugg to raed chapman, but time was not there. It s a worth try.

First 400 pages of lee synopsis

17.Skin—harrison enough. Roxburgh is good to read.

Even though I ve mentioned text books , I used only for back reference. But I think I was doing fairly good in my UG. That helped me a lot. So if u ve missed that time, then u may need to go thro. Text books..

Go thro these sugges patiently,, I may ve missed many.. I am open to ans ur quEries if u believe it ll be useful

I ll continue about how long to read daily, total months req for getting reasonably good ranks and important topics to concentrate, impact of repeat questions .. ( plz bear with me for lengthy , many spelling mistakes. )

HOW LONG TO READ ?

Great individual variations.. my advice will be spare atleast 6 to 8 hrs for sleep. That s more important.. without adequate sleep, whatever u read ll become waste.. don’t sacrifice sleep for anything..
Read atleast 8 hrs a day . if possible increase to 10 hrs. I think that is more than enough. Start gradually, then slowly increase to ur maximum ability. Then gradually decrease as exams are nearing.. don’t read too much near exams. It s not possible to retain a lot near exams.. last one month, don’t read anything new. Do only revision of what u ve learned so far.

TOTAL TIME SPAN:

If u seat properly and continuosly without those duty doctor jobs, it s possible to crack a good rank in 6 to 7 mon, assuming u ve done fair enough during ur UG. Otherwise it may be 10 mon or so.

REPEAT QUESTIONS:

One of characteristics of Indian exams is more than 50% are repeat from previous questions. It s important that u r aware of this fact. So, most crucial in ur preparation will be to answer those repeat ques without fail. If u fail in that, however hard u ve prepared, u may ve answered difficult ques correctly. But that doesn’t matter. U ll be pushed down in rank list. So. Plz don’t underestimate repeat ques as easy. Pay utmost attention to them.

MOCK EXAMS:

Again I am stressing on mock exams. Plz spend 1 or 2 days in checking those answers and assessing where u slipped. Whether it s lack of knowledge or u didn’t give proper attention, and try to correct urself.

I think I ve gone little out of main topics. Anyway I ve given what s possible out of me. U should adopt this and adapt it to ur own strategy. If u ve queries or u don’t understand any, u r most welcome to post in this thread. I am glad to reply at the earliest. Again friends , good luck for PGI and AIPGE .
