Quick Scroll taking the USMLE after indian pg training: 10 FAQs 12.12.06 (1 year ago) #1

Hi everybody,
I am new to this forum. I have completed my internship in 2006 and now studying for aipgmee'07. I am planning to write my USMLE during my PG training in India or just after it due to personal reasons. So it'll be great if some of you take time to answer some of my querries:
1. What is the right speciality to do PG in if one plans to take up medicine or psychiatry in USA?
2. During the busy PG training years what is the right time to take steps 1 and 2(ck)?
3. How expensive can the whole affair (exams, round trips, visa, attorney, etc) be?
4. What are the scores like, which may get residencies in int med and psychiatry to an old (>5 yrs) graduate?
5. How much can publications and interviews help? i've heard they can turn tables.
6. Does clearing USMLE and a fellowship entitle one to unrestricted practice in USA without doing residency there? are there any direct 5-yr programs in pulmonology and critical care or gasroentero/hepatology?
7. With all the money residents get after paying taxes is it possible to run a family comprising of two residents and kids while repaying loans taken for the exams?
8. When does the match take place? When does usually the residency begin?
9. Is there any medical fitness testing at any stage? if yes, what are the requirements/standards?
10. What is USCE? How much can it help? How can one gather USCE if he or she has no contacts in the USA?
