Quick Scroll UK GP VTS Scheme August 2007 01.12.07 (1 year ago) #1

The system for GP training schemes in the UK has changed radically for entry into GP training in August 2007. There is now a four stage process:

Stage 1: Long-list
Stage 2: Assessment for short-listing
Stage 3: Selection
Stage 4: Allocation and Offer

The application form (long-listing) is now only there to ensure you meet the minimum criteria to apply for a training place. The form is only assessed for this and so is very different from forms in previous years. Also it is only available on-line.

Assuming you meet the minimum criteria for entry, you will be invited for assessment and will sit two 90-minute papers, one on clinical problem solving and the other one is on professional dilemmas. Your mark in this assessment will determine if you are short listed and also what deanery you will attend for selection. The highest ranked candidates will get their first choice deanery; others will get one of their lower choice deaneries. Marks are not carried forwards and so when you attend for the selection session at a deanery, you start at the same level as all the other candidates.

At the deanery selection session, which is likely to take half a day, you will be assessed using a combination of assessment methods. These will vary from deanery to deanery but are likely to include interviews, simulated patients and group work. The highest ranked candidates will be offered a training place at the deanery they attended. Those who meet the minimum criteria for appointment but who were not successful in getting a place at the deanery they were assessed at will be entered into a ‘clearing’ system. However, if this is the case, you will only get a training place if there are unfilled training places at other deaneries.
