acute mastoiditis: inflammation of the mucosal lining of antrum and mastoid air cell system. it usually accompanies or follows ASOM. regarding the signs , of the many signs one is swelling over the mastoid. initially there is oedema of periosteum ; later retroauricular sulcus becomes obliterated and pinna is pushed forwardand downwards.

furunculosis (localised acute otitis externa) : a furuncle of posterior meatal wall causes oedema over the mastoid with obliteration of the retroauriculargroove.

so, the conclusion is that the retroauricular sulcus may be obliterated in both the conditions.
