(Recognized by Kathmandu University as eligible for MD/MS)
Manipal Hospital, Bangalore (MHB) offers a three-year residency program in the following specialities:
Candidates who satisfactorily complete the
residency program and fulfill other
requirements of logbook and research will be
eligible to write the MD/MS examinations of
Kathmandu University, which are conducted
in Nepal. These degrees are not recognized
by the Medical Council of India.
Candidates selected for the residency
program have to Register with Kathmandu
University and pay the required fees.
Selection will be based on entrance
examination marks, work experience and
an interview held at Manipal Hospital,
Bangalore.
Eligibility
MBBS or equivalent degree from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India.

Kathmandu University has granted affiliation to several colleges in different disciplines including medical sciences. The university conducts postgraduate programs in medical specialties at some of the affiliated colleges and other approved institutions.
Manipal offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the faculties of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, besides other disciplines.
There is dearth of medical and dental faculties with specialty training in Nepal. Kathmandu University and Manipal have signed an agreement for an academic co-operation. The program under this co-operation seeks to prepare candidates who will pursue careers in clinical and academic medicine who will pursue careers in clinical and academic medicine and dentistry. The training experience of post graduate students at Manipal and other hospitals and institutions, both in Nepal and India, which will result in award of degrees by Kathmandu University, is a collaborative program that will provide significant benefits.
The MOU between Kathmandu University and Manipal has been signed:
To jointly develop and offer conventional and innovative academic programs of high standards.
To cooperate in curriculum development
Conducting workshops and training of personnel
For initiation of post graduation studies and joint research activity
For exchange of faculty and students to further common academic goals.
The postgraduate program is based on the accreditation of Manipal and other hospitals and institutions in India by Kathmandu University. Accreditation implies that candidates who have completed required number of years of supervised and structured clinical experiences in these hospitals and institutions will be considered eligible to appear at the examination conducted by Kathmandu University.
SPECIALIST RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Goals: To offer clinical and research experience to medical and dental graduates through a hospital based residency program.
Objectives: The program aims to help candidates:
Acquire adequate knowledge, attitude and skills to enable them to function as a consultant
Develop qualities of initiative, creativity, sound judgment and logic
Develop skills in critical analysis of scientific literature
Acquire knowledge in recent advances
Develop skills in research
Develop adequate teaching and leadership skills
Expected Outcome: At the end of the prescribed course of study, the candidate should be able to:
Work in the specialty with confidence
Acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the subject of study
Review scientific literature and undertake critical analysis
Undertake research in the respective subject
Educate members of the working team
Use recent modes of information technology.
Period of Training: Training will be for a minimum of 3 years duration.
The trainee will have to go through 3 years full time training. A preceptor will be designated for each post graduate student.
Training Program: Post graduate students will be encouraged in ‘self directed’ learning. Preceptors and other teachers will act as guide only. Formal lectures will be kept to a minimum. Students will actively participate in all the departmental academic activities. Thesis will be compulsory.
Private practice by students is not permitted.
Selection of Candidates: Criteria:
Nepalese – Entrance exam/interview:
To be held at Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel
Indian – Entrance Exam/interview, final MBBS marks, number of attempts and experience.
To be conducted at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore.
Candidates already selected in one PG Program will normally not be allowed to change to another program.
Training Centre: Manipal Group Hospitals accredited to Kathmandu University and the Nepal Medical Council.
