TN govt deceived Medical Council: MK
Chennai, July 14: DMK president M Karunanidhi today said the Medical Council of India (MCI) should accord recognition to medical colleges in Tamil Nadu and take action against the Tamil Nadu government for not providing adequate staff for these colleges.
In a statement here, he said the AIADMK government had "deceived" the MCI team when it inspected the colleges at Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari recently by bringing teaching staff from Chennai and Madurai to these colleges.
The truth came out when the MCI team asked some of the 'staff', who were brought from other colleges, to produce their ration cards as proof of their residential address, he said.
The state government had asked for increasing the number of seats in the medical college at Tirunelveli.
The Union Health Minister, Dr R Anbumani, should take steps for getting recognition to these colleges, he said.
The students should not be punished for the 'crime' committed by the state government, he said.

A reflection of govt apathy
Sir,
The Medical Council of India (MCI) rejecting the plea of government medical colleges in Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli for recognition makes sad reading.
The MCI team which visited the three government medical colleges had stated that the all the three lacked in proper infrastructure facilities which is the sole reason for turning down their applications for recognition.
Moreover, the team found to their chagrin that the medical colleges had no teaching staff in the non-clinical department while Kanyakumari government medical college had no library facilities.
It's really surprising why Chief Minister Jayalalithaa who had vowed to make the State number one in the country in all spheres showed no interest in providing the necessary infrastructure facilities to the government medical colleges.
If this is the situation with the three medical colleges, the fate of the proposed medical college at Andipatti in Theni district, the constituency of Jayalalithaa, is anybody's guess.
Perhaps, the poll debacle has lessened her enthusiasm in concentrating on developmental activities, it seems.

The BJP's Tamil Nadu Unit President C P Radhakrishnan told a press conference here that the CBI should not hesitate to take action against those in the scam, however big they might be.
On the Medical Council of India's reported decision to withhold recognition to two Government medical colleges in the state, he said the Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu should prevail upon MCI to reverse its decision. The MCI should give some time to the Tamil Nadu Government to create infrastructure for these colleges, he said. Some remarks of the Central Ministers from the state made people suspect that they were acting against the interests of the state, he said.

Take action against Government, do not punish medicos: DMK
Chennai, Jul 15 - The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, today expressed the hope that the Union Health Minister, R. Anbumani, would ensure that the Kanyakumari and Tuticorin medical colleges were given MCI recognition and that the Tirunelveli Medical college was permitted to increase its intake by 50.
In a statement here, he said the students should not be punished for the acts of omission and commission of the State Government. The Medical Council of India should take action against it and should not withhold recognition for the colleges.
Mr. Karunanidhi said the teaching hospitals did not have the required number of instructors and equipment. After the MCI inspected the colleges, it brought the limitation to the notice of the State Government.
On receipt of this information, the Government acted in a manner to "cheat" the MCI. Mr. Karunanidhi said doctors from Chennai and Madurai colleges were forced to go to the colleges in the south and act as if they were part of the teaching staff there. This came to light during MCI enquiries, he said.
The DMK chief said if an individual tried to cheat people or a Government it would be a criminal offence. The act of a Government trying to cheat a government organisation was also a criminal offence.
The MCI refused to grant recognition to the colleges, he said and asked what explanation the Government would offer to the affected students. He charged it with trying to deflect the blame, by accusing the Union Government of not according recognition.

Medical colleges issue: MK blames State govt
DMK chief M Karunanidhi has appealed to the Union Health Minister R Anbumani to intensify efforts to ensure that three medical colleges at Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari which have been denied recognition by the Medical Council of India (MCI), were accorded the same at the earliest.
In a statement here, Karunanidhi blamed the State government for the situation and accused it of not having verified adequately whether the colleges met with the required conditions at inception.
Students in these colleges should not suffer for 'mistakes committed by the State government'. The MCI should initiate action against the State government rather than punish students by denying recognition', the DMK chief said.
He claimed that the State government was trying to put the blame on the MCI to hoodwink the public. On questioning doctors transported from Chennai and Madurai to the three medical colleges, the Council had found that that they were actually not working there, Karunanidhi said and urged Anbumani to intervene in the issue.
