Comments from MTAS review panel
As you will be aware, the review panel of the MTAS application process made some preliminary comments on Friday evening. This means that we can now confirm the following:
For those candidates who have been already offered an interview by London/KSS
Interview schedules are unchanged.
We have panels of consultants in all specialties
Please attend for your interviews at the time and place already advised.
If there are any changes to the schedules you will be advised by email.
Please note that the London Deanery website gives speciality-specific details of what documentation you need to bring with you on the day.
For those candidates who have applied to London/KSS and have not been offered an interview
Please see the letter sent to all applicants through MTAS
You should ensure that you regularly access your email and the London Deanery and MTAS websites for updates.
HAS ANYONE RECIEVED ANY EMAIL FROM MTAS TODAY ???

I have received the email, check your mails
In nutshell
In broad terms, this means that all eligible applicants at every stage of their training, whether or not they have already had interviews or interview offers, will be able to review their stated first choice preference and have the opportunity to select the one for which they want to be interviewed. We will be discussing operational details over the next week and these may differ between specialties and between different parts of the UK dependent on local circumstances. We will also consult widely. Exact details for how applicants will be able to do this will be available week commencing 2 April on the MMC website at In the meantime, interviews will continue and applicants should attend unless they are confident that this will not be their preferred choice.

Dear Applicant
RE: MMC selection and recruitment into specialty training in England
We have heard and appreciated the deep concerns that applicants have raised over the past few months and recognise that this has been a challenging and distressing time. During the review, we seriously considered all options, including a full and detailed analysis of pulling out of the current selection process completely. However, many consultants have said that the calibre of candidates they have interviewed is excellent, and they wish to ensure that those applicants will have the best possible opportunity for employment. Many applicants have put in a great deal of time and effort preparing for and attending interviews, and would not wish to have that discounted. Also, reverting back to the old system of recruitment was simply not possible to ensure posts are filled for August. We believe we have come up with the best available solution for England.
The Review Group has now made its proposals for the way ahead. The main decisions agreed today are detailed below:
Applicants already shortlisted and offered an interview
1. All interviews offered in the original Round 1 will be honoured and the outcome will count.
2. All applicants will be given the opportunity to revise or reaffirm their order of preference, in the light of competition ratios, between 20 – 23 April 2007.
3. Where applicants have not already been interviewed for their revised first preference, they will be invited for interview for that preference as well.
4. As originally planned, successful applicants will only be offered one post in this round which will be informed by the highest ranked preference for which they have successfully interviewed.
Applicants not originally shortlisted
1. All eligible applicants will be given the opportunity to revise or reaffirm their order of preference in the light of competition ratios between 20 – 23 April.
2. Applicants for specialty training (excluding general practice) in England will be invited for interview for their affirmed first preference.
3. Successful applicants will only be offered one post.
Applicants to general practice
1. Recruitment and selection for general practice continues to work satisfactorily and will continue as far as possible as originally planned, though the timetable will be revised.
Applicants for academic medical programmes
2. Academic medicine will have a separate selection process and we are currently in discussions with key stakeholders to finalise this plan.
3. Those unsuccessful in their application for an academic post will still be considered for their clinical choices in Round 1.
Applicants who are unsuccessful after their interview in Round 1
1. Applicants who are unsuccessful in the first recruitment round will be able to apply during round 2.
2. Round 2 will be based on a revised shortlisting and interview process including a structured CV.
3. Further details about round 2 will be published as soon as possible.
Career support and guidance is available from your clinical tutor. Whilst considering your options, we would advise you to look at the competition ratios and perhaps talk to your tutor or mentor about which option is the best choice for your circumstances.
We anticipate that further interviews will be scheduled throughout May 2007. Further information on how to book an interview will be available in the revised Applicants Guide, which will be available on the MMC website by 16 April at
It is important that junior doctors continue to support this interview process. If you have any interviews scheduled over the coming weeks, please attend them. The overarching aim of this process is to ensure that the best candidates get into the right jobs.
Once all the interviews have been completed, you will be notified of your interview results by 8 June 2007.
A factsheet for applicants will be available on the MMC and MTAS websites on 5 April.
Yours sincerely,
Professor Neil Douglas
Professor Martin Marshall
Dr Jo Hilborne
Dr Paul Dimitri
