Well, I have passed through a very strange period.. I got md Psychiatry by choice as I loved the subject.. I was getting everything except radiology.. but I went for Psychiatry .. & in 26 days of R1ship, I am so frustrated.. I am on leave now.. & I am thinking of leaving the branch..

I still think I like the subject very much theoritically.. but practically, I can't be in the subject for my whole life..

What I have felt during these days was I can't feel like I m a doctor.. N my all hard work in MBBS is not useful in this branch.. I have to begin from A of ABCD.. even in future my hardwork in MBBS would little matter.. Another thing it was so frustrating for me to see patients having same complains for wks n months but not improving.. n even we know they are not likely to improve. Still we have to reassure "take the medicines.. you will get better.." n smile at them.. I don't feel like I did something.. it all goes on.. This made me very frustrated..

At times it also seemed that Psychiatry could interfere with my own emotional life n religious beliefs.. That's a small point, however.. But I felt that it is better to get in any branch if you want results.. in this branch you have to be self-satisfied yourself only.. otherwise patients n their relatives will keep complaining..

Is my experience ok? or it is not so?? is my frustration based on truth or result of new kind of work n responsibilities?

Many undergo what you have felt ..

It is always a good idea to do a brief period of internship in Psychiatry before you actually join it .. It is a different branch

Just like people with diabetes can have their sugars controlled, but you cannot cure it fully .. mental illnesses are chronic with a few exceptions ..

Being mental illnesses they are devastating - they change the whole person .. where as diabetes or ischemic heart disease at most restricts lifestyles ..

Do take up a branch you are comfortable with .. a branch is for life ..
