NEWS about GP VTS application

Hi Everybody,
I did not get into the GP VTS training at Eastern Deanery despite what I thought was a pretty good background on mine part, good references, CV etc. I wrote an email to Dr Hibble who is the head of the GP recruitment
email: +
and explained that the application process in my opinion was not fair as it had the same problems as the specialist application (we couldn't include a CV, in the interview it was very difficult to show one's abilities, pertinent questions were not asked etc). They are currently reviewing my application. The more people write him the more of a chance we have, they might create more training spots for us, so anybody who reads this should email them with the above points.
Good luck everyone!!!!

Hi,
It is very unfortunate that u did not get selected. But I do agree that there were serious flaws in speciality recruitment. But the GPVTS application and selection was quite fair. It was unifrom through out the country, and was based on written exam results. I beleive the interview was also fair. I donot understant why u want to include a cv. Many training programmes through out the world are carried based on competitive exam and not cv based.

GP interview

sorry, I disagree. The problem is that everybody who has several years of training is able to talk to other physicians at the round table discussion and is able to communicate to patients in an empathatic way. The problem is there are far more people who can do these very simple tasks than there are GP posts so the decision who gets picked is completely random. I would therefore prefer if previous experience, academic accomplishments, reference letter etc would play a bigger role.

you mentioned
"I would therefore prefer if previous experience, academic accomplishments, reference letter etc would play a bigger role"
as opposed to clinical knowledge (MCQ)
ability to communicate with a colleague (group discussion)
ability to communicate with a patient (one on one interview)
i think the weight of assessment is balanced correctly.

MTAS had its own problem .But I strongly belive that it has mordernise the way we do job hunt for medical posts . No where in the world we need to send 10 copies of the same job application. This is pre historic style job hunt. My suggestion is to use MTAS as a job application site for medical posts and rectify the current flaws around it.It saves lot of time of applicants , it was more green as it is paperles. Do we really want to go back in time ??? Let us all welcome ourselves to the 21st centuary.

The problem with group discussion and talking to a patient is, anyone at the test center who has had patient contact for a couple of years can do it. So at the end they they just have to pick people at random. It's doesn't give applicants the possibilities to distinguish themselves. Also the real GP qualities like empathy etc you won't be able to test anyway so why not go by objective measures or letters of reference. At least they are written by people who have seen you work with patients.

I strongly disagree with etiger !!!
The recruitment process for GP is not new. This method is in use for the last 2 years now. For those who have any previous experience, there is an opportunity for them to apply for ST2 or ST3. References bring bias in the system. Many of my friends have been able to secure a GP training post and they TOTALLY deserve it.

To etiger,
I agree with Hanks. If you have past experience you are automatically eligible for ST2 or ST3 level. This means your past experience has been taken into account. Moreover all the people applying at ur level will have good cv and academic experience. So the best way is to go for written competitive exam and based on the rank obtained call them for interview. In the interview there is no point in retesting your clinical knowledge but to see that u have other qualities a good GP must possess.
U plus all the ohters who have attended the interview had the same chance to get through the interview. More over this method of recruitment has been in place for few years now? Why complain now?
