Quick Scroll Allergist - Test results question 06.02.07 (1 year ago) #1

I recently had an IgE test which my doctor said was negative. I have a copy of the lab sheet and would like someone to explain the results for me. What does it mean when there is "21" in the results column? What does the "Reference Values" mean? This is what my sheet looks like:

Tests Results Reference Values

Immunoglobulin E 21 <165.3

Non-fasting specimen

A reference value means the value to which we compare the result to decide whether its abnormal or normal.

In your result, the reference value must be the normal value(means all values less than 165.3 are normal). [please provide the unit after the numbers(like ng/ml)]

Blood serum IgE levels in an non-allergic individual is ~75 ng/ml.

If ur result is 21 ng/ml then the result in normal/test is negative.

IgE test is a test done mainly for allergy. I can also be +ve in some rare immunological diseases & in some parasitic infections.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry, I was tired and forgot to include the units. they are: IU/mL.

Am I allowed to post a follow-up question? If so, what is the difference between IgE and IgG tests?

You are always most welcome to post a query.

An IgE level of 21 IU/mL is normal.

IgE and IgG are different kind of immunoglobins that protect the body against foreign substances. However if their level increases it produces ill effects.

An IgE test is the one usually utilised in patients with allergy. (IgE is the culprit in allergy, when some cells start increased production of IgE on allergen entry)

Where as IgG is mainly responsible for regulating antibody synthesis(not allergy) Thus an IgG test is done for conditions where there are defective antibodies.(some rare condidtions like hypogammaglobulinaemia, recurrent preganacy loss)
