CS requires practice. you have to ask patient questions in english and also do the counselling. this is where FMGs have problem. you can prepare anywhere in the world for the exam but you have to be really prepared with all these. a period of observership in a clinic in US might help in getting oriented and also help in the interview process, etc. also it helps in getting some LOR from uS. so ppl tend to book an exam date in a way that it covers the interview period in US and at the same time are able to do a period of shadowing in a hospital and also do the exam. what i heard the validity of US visa is only for 6 months. and hence you have to plan accordingly. oops i forgot to mention about step 3, ppl also schedule step 3 in this 6 months period. so better plan everything right away. Sept-oct is the peak time for the residency applications and the CS exam. goodluck

Like aamer said...u need to interact with the patient in English.
So it really depends on your basic communication skills and clinical knowledge.
You can definitely prepare in ur home country (most do like this only).
In my opinion having good communication-skill is VERY VERY imp for CS. And most of the IMGs dont realise this fact and continue to cram theory giving least attention to improving communication.
If you wish to do some observership or CS course in the US then n only its useful to go to the US early. Otherwise it wont make much difference.

thanks god I passed!!!
in fact u dont need great clinical skills, just the basic history taking and clinical examination skills.
To be honest, u wont hav much time there so its all about 'showing-off' that u are doing something rather than doing a serious clinical examination in search of positive findings.
its also abt not missing imp points....like do ask abt suicidal risks in a possible depression pt, consider MI/PE in a chest pain etc. In other words u mustn't miss the life threatening situations. FA gives all these details.

Sorry i thought u meant clinical skills.
I dont think there will b any such station as suturing/catheterisation/iv cannulation etc. Not in my knowledge.
u see the difficulty of any exam also depends on the pass rate. Current pass rate (as i read on various forums) of CS is around 85%, which is v high. so there r more chances that u will pass the exam. but on the other hand being such an expensive n imp exam u cant afford to be in the last 15%!
In nutshell....read FA, do timed practice of the cases and u'll b fine.

Hi rks,I cant find words to thank u for ur care and fast reply.
85% is of course very high success rate and it would be disaster if one came in the other 15%
Another question if u please:
What about of clinical skills of the specialities rather than IM such as ENT
,Ophthalmology
...etc. r they many in CS?
Good luck
