Atkins diet is very low carbohydrate diet.

it is used in treatment of obesity...

Advantages:

a) more effective for short-term weught loss in comparision to standard caloric restriction..
b) weight loss with little adverse effect on lipid profile, glycemic control & BP..

Diasdvantage: not more effective in maintaining weight loss..

It is starvation diet which was used before the discovery of Insulin....

Interestingly, apparently the idea that Dr Atkins was obese when he died was something spun by PETA as he was oedematous when he died -> to the apparent obesity.
