FAQ: Purple/bluish fringing in pictures

Hi! I didn't notice the purple fringing of some of the pics I've taken while viewing them on the LCD, but when I transferred it to the PC, it was horrible!
What can I do to fix this or to make sure it doesn't happen again? Do I need to do something with my camera other than return it (lol!).
Thanks in advanced.

This happens when we take pictures against very bright light (ex: sun or street lights).
To fix this: Open the image in Photoshop>>
Click toolbar, select image>adjustments>hue/saturation>>In the drop down menu, select Magentas. Using the eyedropper tool, click on the darkest area of purple fringing.
Now move the saturation slider down to -50, and move the lightness slider down to -50.
You can use any software you have, but mainly you have to play with hue/saturation settings.
To avoid this: Avoid shooting with a wide-open lens in high contrast scenes.
Avoid shooting against very bright objects, and near sodium or gas lights (their vapors can give similar results.)
Is your camera Sony DSC by any chance?

Hi Blue_mars,
But I didn't shoot the pics under bright lights...
And yup, my camera is sony dsc. I only used the 3MP to shoot the pics.
Thanks... I will try editing it in photoshop!

Usually it happens with bright lights including lights inside the house. Most of the DSC range of cameras
will produce this at high pixel rate (above 5 mega pixel).
Try Photoshop and let us know the results. Good luck

I've tried adjusting the hue/saturation but it didn't remove the bluish tinge of the pics. However, adjusting the color balance removes the bluish tinge of the pics. And one more thing I've discovered is that clicking on the image auto level or auto color also removes the bluish tinge and makes the picture very nice and clear.
