Y shud u do an MBA
after MBBS ....
hie
it may sound funny/wierd/dilusioned for u . as to y shud one do an MBA
after an mbbs degre.
lets first look at the presnt scene where a person has just completed d mbbs degree ...
what options does he have ....
1. go for a foreign degree [usemle / PLAB
/ mchrc ]
2. stay in india
if he has to stay in india then he has d option of ...
1. start earning [ by doin a job somewher ... lets say he gets @5-10k initially ]
2. start a clinic ... as a family physician General Practioner
3. try for Pg [ which is highly competetive and u may even requier multiple trial, n if u go for paid seats thn its not less than 25lakhs ]
suppose u do get in for a Pg .....
then what ???
u do a residancy for 3yrs and again u come up with same quest ....
1. start earning [ job @20-30k initially ]
2. start a clinic ... as a consultant [ which may req investments more than 20lakhs minimum]
3. get better job @40k only after 3-5yr of experiance
so..... by the time u really start earning goooood money and recover frm ur loans u r already 35+
Now lets look at MBA
as an option ......
if u have observed the trends in market ....... wht i feel personally is that the next BIG thing in Medical field is ..
1. Corporate hospital
2. Medical tourism
everythn these days is gettng organised sector .... example retail ..... d same is gonna be true for HOSPITALS too .... wher perple wud be awarded gr8 services at reasonble rates by d BIG players..... loook at Fortis, it recently has a picked up project [1000 crore] in Punjab
to buiild a 2000 bed hospital ...... look at Appolo hospital ... it is also moving in d same segment. Though these players r in for Multispecialty segment .... stil ther rests a huge potential for d routine practice.
Even today d major mass of people go in for PVT. docters even though d govt hospital provides d services at very low rates and if Corporates gonna come in n offer d services at cheaper rates thn it gonna be a BIG bizz ...
These corporates wud requier two types of people... .First DOCTERS [with experiance min 5y... who wud be payed say @40k] and d management guys [ who wud be payed 40-50k ] and if they get DOCTER+MBA
[ its a bonus to them ... ]
d scope for DOCTER+MBA
wud be Management of hospital supplies/reqd of docters /Quality assurance n control / who knows d possibilites are endless .... !!!
if u go for a MBA
after MBBS , these companies[ healthcare services as well as pharma companies ] wud be more than willing to give u a job.
Similarly, d possibilities of Medical torism r also immense ... stil a developing sector with huge potenstial.
Now,
as a docter [without a MBA
] ..... d possibilities of reachng higer level of mangement Or startng ur own BIG bizz or Med tourism is really really difficult .....
If u think u have d management abilites ..... DREAM BIG ... want to make it big , not only in d med field but also in d corporate world ........ u have to hav a MBA
... !!!
Many wud argue ..... as it is devaluating d Docter /medical proff if one does a MBA
. he is nolonger a doc. Thats NOT TRUE..... The fact is when u do an MBA
, u r simply increasing ur oportunities !!! Its not tht u r not gonna serve d pt, rather u wud be serving MUCH more pt thn u cud individually !
THINK ABOUT IT !!!!!!! and please give ur views

hi vicky,
nice 2 c ur post after such a long hiatus
well I wud like 2 tell u that a considerable no of Docs r now pursuing MBA
instead of a clinical career. I think there are a no of reasons for this :
1. personal choice of pursuing a non clinical career, while sticking on in the healthcare industry.
2. better working hrs in the sense of not having 24 hr duties.
3.better renumeration , at the beggining of ur career.
However, I wud like2 point out here that doing an MBA
is pretty gruelling.4 docs especially, It means acquainting urself with quantiataive subjects like Accounts, Finance. Also working hrs can be pretty long.
these were my 2 cents!waiting 2 hear from others!

yeah ..... i was busy with my final mbbs prep .. started my internship recently ..
You are bang on target !!
it't true tht persuing for an MBA
may not be that easy and is a Risk ..... but then for Rewards u r likely to get after an MBA
r worth it ...
i think while doing mbbs ..... most of us hav started building a Tubular vision .... and even while doing our pg d things wud be same and d REWARDS we get after doing such hard work are very less.... it's a type of expoitaion of d doc and thts a frustratin for us
what i mean is...... even after doing a pg d money [coz tht d last thing tht counts] n d appreatiation [its only after few years of experiance] u get is quiet less Moreover d future is more or less monotonus in terms of doing a job [say 40k-50k]. Now if u r considering starting up ur own clinic then it reqs HUGE investment and n possibly u wud look up for partner to set up d clinic [ say 50bed ] . At the end of it u are again mainly involed in managing u r own hospital [ as a member of organizing/main committee ].
So, if u r gonna manage u r own hospital sooner or later ........ y not go for a MBA
and manage bigger hospitals itself ????
As far u r contact/Rx pt is considered ..... u can devote u r med skills free of cost in treating d poor

todays economic times states another artical reagarding d current emeging trends.....
another acqusition of Global hospitals by Fortune capital holding woth 250 cr. they r group of multispeciality hosp, in delhi kolkatta and hydrabad.
it also states d recent reports by Mckinsy @d healthcare sector n d fact tht docter-pt ratio as well as pt-bed ratio is much much lower [@0.86] as compared to china [@1.1 or more] and other countries !! d that ther is gr8 potential in providing Healthcare services at resonable rates !! [which is possible only if by big corporates ] n d best way to reach upto such people is via doing an MBA
!!!!!!!

Management has become the need of the hour today. Whether it is your business or your personal life, effective management leads to efficiency and productivity.
With the growth of population the need for health care service has increased tremendously in the last decade. As a result more and more hospitals, government run as well as private; nursing homes; and health care centres have sprung up.
For a smooth working of a hospital and to ensure better services to the patients, growing number of hospitals are recognising the need for professionals to run the management of the hospitals.
Health care/ hospital administrators and managers deal with planning, finance, personnel management, purchase and supply, building maintenance and the organisation of laundry, catering and cleaning.
Health care/ hospital management is concerned with efficiency and cost effectiveness at all levels of health services. Administration assists the governing board to determine hospital objectives and policies and link them to departments and services.
Since the job of managing a health care service involves planning, organising and coordinating of services, aspirants should be able to make difficult decisions and possess strong time management skills and personal commitment.
Health care/ hospital managers must understand finance and information systems, be able to interpret data and maintain good communication with staff and members of various departments. They must establish ways to monitor and improve patient care.
Health care/ hospital manager
Health administration specialisation aims to focus on community organisation in community health, health systems research, public health legislations, urban health, health policy formulation and implementation, financing of health services, management of national health programmes and so on.
Hospital Management, however, focuses on social services in hospitals, financial management, organisation and administration of clinical/ support services, legal framework of hospitals, hospital planning, quality assurance, marketing management, strategic management, and information management.
Education & Training
The most accepted professional training in this field used to be the three-year Masters in Doctorate (MD) programme in hospital management/ administration meant for medical graduates (MBBS). However, there are few opportunities for non-medical students as well.
Placements
Health care is considered to be the world’s largest industry today. It is said to be the fastest growing private consumption category. Well-known Indian hospitals such as Apollo, Escorts Heart Centre, Bombay Hospital and Hinduja Hospitals are among those who offer professionally managed health care in India.
India has a huge potential for growth and hence need for more health care managers as the health services industry continues to expand and diversify.

hie ......
again back aftr a longer hiatus ........ hav been preparin for cat 2007 ... gav d cat [though did actually bell d cat ] but stil got a diffrent perpective towards doing a MBA
aftr mbbs especially aftr al this MBA
prep.
One thing that i realised while preparing for d MBA
is .... though doc r bettr placed with regards to verbal ability & logical reasonin section, maths/quant does reqier a lot [ n i mean a looottts ] of effort or rather regular practice. three months time [ thats wht i had ] is not sufficiet to crack it [especially if u r doing ur internship] . If you hav stil doing ur internship thn u must start by may-june [ i mean serious maths practice daily ] to be able to crack it.
Also thats not all that u require ........ In addition to maths practice you should be a voracious reader [ which i suppose will not be a problem for doc ] ........ but d catch is You should read all d Gk magazine / novels / newspapers / recent trends n development / politics / sports .... et al .... in short u shd hav a basic knwoladge of a lot of subjects/field. Now being in medical .... i don't knw how much updated ur knwladge may be. ???? but better start refreshin it al and u wud hav to do it al ur life ..... through out d carrer coz u hav to be updated not only @d particular field/sector but u also need info about others.
Anothr thing that occoured to me during this period is ...... In addition to apptitute to crack d cat / MBA
entrace u must also hav d ATTITUDE n TEMPRAMENT .... d ability to be a leader/enterprenure ....... to be able to convince othr of ur views .... a logical flow of thoughts n critical reasonin n extensice knowladge [not just medical but othr fields also] .... a long term visioin ......... and MOST IMPORTANT ......... "d purpose of doing a MBA
" .... that my dear friend is d post difficult part which u hav to be answer to yourself as well to others ..... Do not tend to shrug off d question ... please be very clear ... first within yourself as to why u want to do a MBA
????
Ofcourse ... being frustated with medical career ... on does enjoy d initial part of study BUT keep on askin urself if u want to do this for al your life.
You may see BIG $$$$$$$ after doing a MBA
[ i knw 99.9 % of u thinking to do a MBA
hav this goal ] .... but also look at what u r keepin at stake. Remember you are a DOCTOR ....... and u will succeed in whatever field u enter [ coz u ver chosen among d best to become a doc ] .... so choose wisely ... if u want a MBA
..... [coz u wil lose d repute of a doc after entrin d MBA
stuff ] or do u want to continue being a Doc ......
PLEASE POST YOUR VIEWS.

anothr thing tht i realised was......
dont decide about doing a MBA
just because u c ur engg frnds / bcom frnds do it and earn BIG $$$$$ packages. and u think MBA
+ MBBS wil be a BIG $$$$$ bagger . No doubt @it ...... it will but it ain't as easy as it looks like.
You see .... these corporate hospital that we talked about ..... will requier doctors ..... won't they ?? and they would pay d doc heaftly to retain d GOOD DOC .... ??? rt ?? so u could switch over diffrnt corporate hospital n in few years [say 5 yrs] time u would be earning enuf ... i suppose. Again with time YOUR personal brand value [ as a GOOD doctor] wil continue to offer u handsome returns.
Also u can opt for a MBA
course much easily if have experience in d health care [ most institutes prefer candidates with experience ] So u can do a MBA
after few years of experience too ......... but you cant go back to being a DOC after doin a MBA
..... REmember it !!!
So think thoroughly ...... first at your abilities as a leader n ur temprament n ablility to deal with people along with d diffenent pros / cons before ariving at a final decision.
