I have been selected for Paed-resident's post at saudi, but don't know the working pattern at all at Saudi. Can anybody guide me?
I am planning to take further exams like MLE etc. simultaneously working over there as I shall be in touch with some clinical part (instead of preparation sitting at home). How is the working condition? I have gone thr' some posts at this site stating humiliating conditions & the health risks etc. Have the things changed by now? What about the status of working women perticularly docors? Do they have to cover their face also & do they still have restrictions to go out?
What's the payscales on an average since as yet I have not got anything in written from the agent.
Please help me as I am in dilema whether to accept this or not as I am also preparing for DNB
that I have to sit again & I guess it will be done better at a teaching institute only.

I am a GP currently working for the MOH Saudi Arabia. I can give you precise details about the working condition here as I have more then 10 years experience. Please give me details about whether the job you have been selected to in govt. or private and for which place are you selected. Generally working in Saudi Arabia is a sort of compramise to so many things including a bit of your pride. In my case I had some commitments so I came here for some quick buck, but as time passed by I got used to and even though the purpose for which I had come fullfilled, other purposes propped up and so I got stuck into this job. If you are really in need of money, then you can go ahead and accept the job. But make sure it is going to be temporary as it is easy for people to get used to the money you get and get stucked here. Offcourse as every one has posted there are a lot of problems one has to face as an foreigner here, especially if you are one from Asia. But a little smartness can get u a lot of fruit. Anyway, give me more details so that I can tell u much more in that regard.

Thanks for the info. I shall be going thro' MOH. But area I could not find on the map that is said to be probably 'Gizan'. Is there any academic sort of environment so as to prepare for exams? Are the consultants friendly enough? What's the basic salary on the basis of MBBS presently?

Gizan (also known as Jizan) is in the southern part of Saudi Arabia and the climate there is nearly like that in India (I have only heard this, never been there).
At MOH the basic salary which I am drawing now is SR 5000 + 200 per year of experience (max 5 years), then you get 3 months pay as HRA every year and SR 400/month as transport allowence. If they are giving you a house or providing transport then the allownces will be deducted.
Contract is generally for one year but it automatically gets renewed unless you give in written that you do not like to renew it or if they dont like you they may just not renew it.
The work environment is a little strange, Saudis generally consider all foreigner especially those from Asia as their servants and so you cannot expect big respect from them. There are many downsides here, but once you know the people you get used to them. None of your patients will speak anything other then Arabic here. You may get help from your collegues in matter of language, but it may not always be there.
Try to be honest, honesty always helps here though it may not appear so in the beginning.
Importantly you can expect your first salary only after 3 months so dont forget to take some money with you.
Preparation for other exam is possible here unless you fully use your spare time. In some hospitals the work load may be heavy so it is possible for you to get tired. If you are working in a remote PHC you get lot of time to study. If your aim is sitting for some exam then either stay at home or try to get into some remote PHC in Saudi.
Anyway best of luck, if you have any other doubt you can ask me.

Thanks a lot for the exhaustive info. It appears that I must know Arabic. How many hours we have to work for ? If I am alotted a pediatric post can I be asked to work as casualty medical officer or emergency medical officer on general duty? What about the facility for transport? Is there any public transport or they provide vehicle? How about staying outside the hospital campus, how safe are they as far as a woman staying alone is concerned & can she go out alone?

If you are working in a hospital or PHC, the working hours are generally 8 hours. The actual calculation is 48 hrs/wk and so if your hospital is of the type which has got both Thursdays and Fridays offs then you will work 9.5 hrs per day but if you are working in ER then it will be 8 hrs per day but you will get only one day off per week. If you are posted as a pediatric resident then I am sure you will get 2 days off per week. It may not be necessary that you will get the same post that you are promised here. Generally it will be the same, but in case they require you in a particular place then it is possible that they may post you in that place. Which may not be of pediatric speciality. But try to insist on the post that they promised you.
If you are a single female, then they will provide you with accomadation in the hospital itself and so there wont be a necessity for transport and hence it is possible that you may not get both your HRA or your transport allowence.
It is not allowed in Saudi Arabia for single females to stay outside. If you are married then you can stay with your family outside, otherwise it is mandatory that you stay in the quarters that they provide. Generally these quarters are fully furnished and very good and safe too.
You will not be allowed to go outside alone. Every week you will be taken as a group by a driver for shopping. You will be given some 3 or 5 hours during which you will be free to roam around with your collegues in the market. Remember there are religious police here, so better stick together while you are in such trips. This makes it safe for females here. But many dont like this kind of treatment. It is totally subjective.
