will anyone guide me about THE PRELIMINARY PROGRAMS.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT IN THEM FROM THE CATEGORICAL PROGRAMS?
PLEASE LIST THE UNIVERSITIES IN THE USA WHICH OFFER THESE PROGRAMS IN INTERNAL MEDICINE AND GENERAL SURGERY?
WHAT ARE THE VISA OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE IMGS WHO GO INTO THESE?
WHO SPONSORS FOR THE VISA?

Preliminary programs are similar wrt application, eligibility, visa etc. They are 1 year programs in Medicine or Surgery that count as your PGY1.

Certain specialities like Radiology, Anesthesia, Ophthal etc have mainly the 'Advanced' programs that start from PGY2 and thus to get into them you have to do a preliminary (aka transitional year with some difference) year first.

Categorical programs: Start from PGY1 and thus have the transitional year included in them. Most programs in IM, Peds, Gyn Obs , FM, Psychi are categorical.

hey AshB thanks for the post..it was indeed very informative..
but can you kindly throw some light on this...i.e.
1)after doin the preliminary year in surgery do you get into a pgy2 position or you may have to repeat the pgy1 year again when you join any categorical program next year..
2) do you get to continue your pgy2 in the same same hospital or will you have to hunt for a new hospital during the next match & go through the entire application process again..

any help on this will be greatly appreciated AshB...coz i just havent been able to get anyconcrete information about any of this..
thanks..

Yes you get a PGY2 position

No you have to apply again after a preliminary surgery program and match again in an advanced program ie. that starts with PGY2. There are two ways to do it:
1. You match into preliminary year and while doing your preliminary year apply in the next match for a PGY2 position.
2. You can also apply for both preliminary and advanced programs in the same match. In this case the advanced program starts from the next session. For example if you apply in 2008 match for both preliminary and advanced surgery and match into both in the same match: You start your preliminary year in 2008 and your advanced year in 2009. In this case you don't have to participate in match again.

Hope it helps. I know its very confusing, even i get confused every now and then.. icon_biggrin.gif
