Quick Scroll without PR or Job Offer , Writing AMC too risky. 11.27.07 (10 months ago) #1

Hi blokes,
I am currently in Australia .This is the true situation here now.Even people who have passed AMC clinical and already working in Area of need are finding it hard to get the rotations to get Full registration. You need to do 12 months supervised practice with rotations in ED, surgery ,Medicine to be granted full registration.Without Full registration you cannot get PR from Dep. of Immigration. It is a catch 22 situtation. It is getting very very hard to find such 12 months supervised posts. Some states even have conditions that you get PR before you apply for the supervised practice which is done through centralised allocation .
So my sincere advice- You are taking a gamble by writing AMC unless you are a permanent resident or you are already working in Australia under some category like area of need or postgrad training .

Hi Bug,thanks for offering help. What if you don't get full registration for a period of 4 years or more in one state?Do you have to find work in another state?
One more thing, how long can a OTD work as temporary resident in Australia ?Is there any time -limit to that?

you can work only in hospital that is mentioned in visa. But these days the employer can apply for a generic visa where the employee can work under any hospital under him. the only limiting factor would be registration and provider number.
So if you have to change the state , you have to have new visa , new registration from the respective medical board.
earlier they used to give registration more than 4 yrs. But these days you can work only 4 yrs after which you should have general or specialist registration.

VMO means visiting medical officer. they practise both in public hospital and private hospital. They are usually specialists (some remote areas GP specialists too). It is a hard position to get if you are applying from overseas because the visa issued by immigration is specific for one employer. VMO works for many employers.
completing one year as GP after AMC exams may be taken as experience for full registration in some state medical boards like WA. But , as far as I know most of the medical boards would want a person to work in a hospital set up before granting full registration.
If you are working as GP, the best pathway would be to get fellowship from GP Royal college

Hi Bug,

while studying some course (e.g public health) and preparing for amc registration in Australia , if part one is cleared and I engage in a part-time MO job in hospital - will that be considered towards satisfying 1 yr supervised training!! icon_question.gif

No,
I dont think the medical board would be satisfied with a part time experience and that too before passing AMC clinicals.
