There is nothing like necessary. Its upto VO, people have gotten visa without even one step and people have been rejected even after both steps and high scores. but one step is generally considered ok.

To apply you need to deposit fees in the HDFC bank and then using the bar code number on the bank receipt you can take your appointment online. You'll need your documents when you go for the interview.

Yes, its the visitor visa which can be B1 or B2 but that is not decided during visa interview. B1 or B2 is decided at the port of entry when you enter US.

Go to vfs usa website (google it) and read the exact latest procedure. Schedule it early to get dates of your choice but don't take a date 4-6 weeks before your CS date because the VO might refuse to give you visa so much in advance of your required dates. Of course you need to be registered for Step2CS and already taken a date to prove that you are actually going for CS.

If you plan to take CK before your CS you can schedule your interview after CK so you can show your documents that you have appeared for CK (this is what i did), though he didn't even ask for a single document during my interview.

Dear AshB when I tried finding a tentative slot for appointment at the visa website.. it just showed appointments of january. and when I clicked on February .. it showed .. that its not available. how is that? do they release the appointment slots of the immediate coming months only?? My CS date is 15th May . I wanted to book my appointment beforehand now for March. But i dnt find any appointment slots.
whats their policy... any idea?

and yeah... May we all have a list of all documents which we shoud take along with us? that will be a great help for all of us aspiring for visa.

Yeah they release the dates as needed. Last year they were releasing dates only 1-2 months in advance. But remember May-June is a mighty busy period so check regularly whenever they are expected to be released. You can call the visa help center and ask them expected time when your desired dates will be released.

I've started a new thread on visa documents US visa forum. Go though it.

I have My CS exam on 15th May 2008 for which I wud be leaving on 10th May. when should i schedule the Visa appintment.
I have heard that scheduling appointment 1 month and earlier is not good.
If the visa is granted can I leave the very next day.

You can leave once you have your passport with you with the visa stamp. If you collect from passport collection center you can get it next day or the day after depending on consulate. If its mailed to you, it'll take longer.

I think scheduling within the 1 month period before your intended departure would be a good idea. It is important since one might get only a 6 month visa which starts from the day its stamped. So if its closer to the departure date, you can stay in US longer before it expires.

And one more thing....
As I already said My exam is on 15th May and I wud schedule my appointment somewhere in mid April or late April.
But the visa dates are not available yet... as they have not released the dates...... so should I fill the application with the HDFC fee receipt now and opt for the appointment later.... or.... one has to fix an appointment right at the time of filling the online application?

Do we have to have some kinda medical examination also.. like proof of Hepatitis B vaccination, yellow fever vaccination, HIV status and PPD tests, Chest Xray etc.??
