President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin greets Russians on occasion of New Year
MOSCOW, January 1 (rxpg russian forum - by pearllysun - russian forum moderator ) - As the Kremlin Chimes were about to strike midnight December 31, 2007, President Vladimir Putin made a traditional New Year televised address to nationwide audiences, the last one for him in the presidential office since the presidential elections are in due .
“Dear fellow Russians, I’d like to say a few special words to you now,” Putin said. “As we bid good-bye to the outgoing year, I’d like to give you my hearty thanks for everything that we’ve done together over the past eight years.”
“Everything we’ve attained would be impossible without consistent support on your part, without your trust and commitment to this country’s revival.
“Not only did we restore the country’s territorial integrity, but we’ ve also regained the feeling of being a united nation.
“Through all these years we’ve worked together to keep up this country and to turn it into a modern, free and strong state where people’s life would be comfortable and convenient.
“We can well see that Russia
’s strength and power continue swelling from one year to another, that our economy continues growing, and that ever more new opportunities open up before people.
“Surely, we didn’t manage to do some things but I’m confident that the pathway we chose is the right one and it will eventually lead us to a success.
“We have all the prerequisites for it – a great history, huge resources, courage, a good working ability, and the intellectual potential of our great nation.”
Putin recalled that the New Year is a holiday uniting too “love for the near and dear ones, the comforts of home, and the hope that everything will work out alright, that life will become better, that our children will be happy, and that the elder generations will enjoy good health and prosperity.”
“Then this country will continue getting stronger and flourishing, and so let us wish one another new successes,” Putin said.
“Let us raise our glasses with champagne to the happiness and health of our families and friends, of all those who we love and cherish or who we would like to be together with us today.
“May the best of our dreams come true. Joy and happiness to you, dear friends.”
Ukraine ranked as second biggest potato consumer in Europe
In the International Year of the Potato, declared by the United Nations in 2008, Ukraine has a record high potato crop, about 20 million tons.
“In all of Europe only Russia
produces more potato than Ukraine, while as to the amount of its consumption per capita we are the second in the world after Belarus,” Ukrainian agricultural expert Andrei Yarmak said on Wednesday. He said potato is a staple food in the diet of Ukrainian people always . “We consume it more than bread,” he said .
Yearly, an average Ukrainian national consumes 150 kilograms of potato. According to the Kiev international sociology institute, about 70 percent of able-bodied population, including those living in cities, grow potatoes.
Ukrainians started eating potato back in the 17th century, while by the end of the 18th century it was grown in all Ukrainian regions due to its high consumption and popularity .
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko’s favourite recipe is as follows. Potatoes are incised and lardon is put inside. They are salted, peppered, rolled into foil and put into the oven. Baked potatoes are served with slices of Danube herring, which, for its part, is served with vegetable oil, onion and lemon slices.

true akrhsahni ! infos about Russia
is really amazing and impressive ! such a big nation . It is a semi-presidential republic comprising 84 federal subjects. Russia
proper shares land borders with the following countries (counter-clockwise from northwest to southeast): Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and North Korea. Additionally, the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad shares borders with Lithuania and Poland. It is also close to the U.S. state of Alaska, Sweden and Japan across relatively small stretches of water (the Bering Strait, the Baltic Sea, and La Pérouse Strait, respectively).
At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi) and with 142 million people, Russia
is by far the largest country in the world, that cover's more than one-eighth of the Earth’s land area, and ninth-largest by population. It extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Europe, spanning 11 time zones and incorporating a great range of environments and landforms. Russia
possesses the world's largest mineral and energy resources, and is considered an energy superpower. It contains approximately one-quarter of the world's unfrozen fresh water and has the world's largest forest reserves.
Russia
established worldwide power and influence from the times of the Russian Empire to being the preeminent constituent of the Soviet Union, the world's first and largest Communist state, and can boast a long tradition of excellence in every aspect of the arts and sciences. The Russian Federation was founded following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, but is recognized as the continuing legal personality of the Soviet Union. Russia
is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council which it acquired following the soviet union and a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the G8 and other global organizations. It is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the world's largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction.
Russia
declared an arsenal of 40,000 tons of chemical weapons in 1997 and is said to have around 8400 nuclear weapons stockpiled in 2005, making its stockpile the largest in the world. ( but it's nuclear stockpile is believed to be around 16,000)
Russia
has an extensive coastline of over 37,000 kilometers (23,000 mi) along the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, as well as the Baltic, Black and Caspian seas. The Barents Sea, White Sea, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, East Siberian Sea, Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan are linked to Russia
. Major islands and archipelagos include Novaya Zemlya ( new area ), the Franz Josef Land, the New Siberian Islands, Wrangel Island, the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. The Diomede Islands (one controlled by Russia
, the other by the United States) are just three kilometers (1.9 mi) apart, and Kunashir Island is about twenty kilometers (12 mi) from Hokkaidō.
Russia
has thousands of rivers and inland bodies of water, providing it with one of the world's largest surface water resources. The most prominent of Russia
's bodies of fresh water is Lake Baikal, the world's deepest, purest and most capacious freshwater lake. Lake Baikal alone contains over one fifth of the world's fresh surface water. Of its 100,000 rivers,] The Volga is the most famous—not only because it is the longest river in Europe but also because of its major role in Russian history. Major lakes include Lake Baikal, Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega. Russia
has a wide natural resource base including major deposits of petroleum, natural gas, coal, timber and mineral resources unmatched by any other country
"Father of All Bombs" is the nickname of a Russian-made air-delivered thermobaric weapon that is claimed to be four times more powerful than the U.S. military's GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb (MOAB or the "mother of all bombs"), making it the most powerful publicly-known conventional (non-nuclear) weapon in the world.
It was successfully field-tested in the late evening of September 11, 2007, when it was apparently dropped from a Tupolev Tu-160 heavy bomber with a parachute and exploded.[2] Russia
says the weapon yields the equivalent of 44 tons of TNT using 7.8 tons of a new type of high explosive, claimed to be created applying "nanotechnology". In comparison, the MOAB produces the equivalent of 11 tons of TNT from 8 tons of high explosive. The blast radius of 300 m is twice as large as the MOAB.
Photos and video of the bomb suggest that it is designed to be deployed out of the back of a slow moving cargo plane .
Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2007
He has a Black Belt in Judo!
Indeed a very strong world leader.
yup BGM !
He is one of the popular leader in the world - In December 2007, Putin-backed United Russia
won 64.24% of the popular vote in their run for State Duma according to election preliminary results. Their closest competitor, the Communist Party of Russia
, won approximately 12% of votes. United Russia
's victory in December 2007 elections is seen by many as an indication of strong popular support of the current Russian leadership and its policies
According to public opinion surveys conducted by Levada Center, Putin's approval rating was 81% in June 2007, and the highest of any leader in the world. His popularity rose from 31% in August 1999 to 80% in November 1999 and since then it has never fallen below 65%. Observers see Putin's high approval ratings as a consequence of higher living standards that improved during his rule and Russia
's reassertion of itself on the world scene .
Putin won't be giving up the reins of power entirely
" Putin was born Dec 7, 1952, in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, to a metal worker and a cleaner. He defined himself through his work. He describes working like a 'galley slave' in one of his jobs. He's often accompanied by his black Labrador Koni, but seldom appears in public with his wife and two daughters. Putin likes to be behind the wheel of fast cars."
By pearllysun - RxPG forum Russian moderator [RxPG]Moscow, March 2 (DPA) Moscow, March 1 (DPA) Even at the end of his eight-year term in office, Russian President Vladimir Putin's thirst for power is unquenched.
Nevertheless, the 55-year-old Putin asserts that if power is addictive, he's never felt any dependency. The former head of the Russian secret police has earned a reputation as a 'national leader' and as a successful economic reformer.
He will continue those roles as prime minister under his handpicked successor, Dmitry Medvedev, who is expected to win Sunday's presidential election in Russia
. 'God has given me the strength for it,' said the one-time communist.
Putin, a passionate horseman, will not be giving up the reins of power entirely. When he posed in front of cameras topless in the summer of 2007 while fishing, the display of his muscular chest was not just proof of his vitality. The pictures were also a symbol of the growing self-confidence of Russia
. That has come in useful, as Putin has conducted himself uncompromisingly on the subjects of Kosovo, US missile defence plans and energy deliveries.
In the West his hold on power often left the impression that he was increasingly an unpredictable and cool autocrat. US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton recently called him a 'KGB man without a soul'. His retort: 'A statesman should have above all else a head.'
People who meet the relatively short man often gush about his charm. 'Obviously he's a very intriguing figure in modern history,' said Dana Perino on the selection of Putin as Time magazine's Person of the Year 2007.
In a quick-witted response to rumours that no Russian is as wealthy as he, Putin said, 'That's the truth. I am the richest person - in feelings.' He admitted to having some stock holdings, but he said all other claims were 'pulled out of a nose and smeared on a piece of paper'.
When speaking with constituents, Putin, who grew up poor and later studied law, likes to show that he has the common touch himself and is a solid speaker. He learned to speak German while working for the KGB in East Germany.

The cult of personality surrounding the decisive and disciplined president is large. Members of the opposition and critics can't go along with his politics. They accuse him of having created a police state. What Putin refers to as 'guided democracy' is what they call Putinism, defined as the regimentation of access to the media and elections for people who think differently. In speeches Putin berates Kremlin opponents within Russia
as jackals or vengeful oligarchs that want Russia
to crash into chaos.
