Junior doctors are facing a huge battle for training jobs which threatens to leave many careers in limbo.
Medics cannot go on to become a GP or specialist without securing a post.

And a recent Court of Appeal ruling means priority cannot be given to home grown applicants, meaning they face stiff competition from around the world.

Sian Thomas, of NHS Employers, said: "There are around 9,000 posts for around 23,000 estimated applicants, that's what the Department of Health has told us.

"It is a good thing for patients that there is competition for jobs - it should mean they get the best doctors wherever they live."

But she said "taxpayers money is going to waste" if doctors who had started their training in the UK could not find posts.

The number of training places available in England this year is lower than 2007, when there were around 15,600 posts.

However, an application system for jobs has changed this year and the controversial national IT system has been dropped.

Instead, applications are dealt with locally.

Last month, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) announced that the DoH had been found in breach of the Data Protection Act following leaks of personal information about junior doctors using the Medical Training Application Service (MTAS).

Medics had already complained that application forms were badly worded and resulted in many of the best candidates not being granted interviews.

The recruitment process for jobs starting in August has now begun.
