Quick Scroll Merit and Demerits of MMST 06.07.06 (1 year ago) #1

@ Everybody!
Friends, the reputation of MMST seems growing day by day. Well, any new stream blostered with interdisciplinary curricula and that too in a premier institute is always a hype. This is a course totally meant for doctors as per the current scenario but is intended to admit students with engg stream in the future (once the required infrastructure is developed for it). A panorama of information and queries about MMST are seen in this forum.
Your fate can be destined only by you and don't let others decide it. Before dreaming for MMST , have a crystal clear detail about it (don't dream for MMST offhandedly b'cos it does not worth the hype). It is all based on individuals taste in a particular career. As everybody says, it is true that only those who lost faith or interest in conventional medicine and those whose utmost priority is to take up a research career should prefer to take up MMST while those who are just moved by whims and fancies of MMST should not even waste their time in looking into this forum rather they should keep going with their PG preparation steadfast. A good knowledge in mathematics and taste for physics is an added benefit. Astract thinking is very essential to keep going with the course lest you may feel dejected with it and may go to the extent of giving up the course. So much for intro, now the facts vis-a-vis:

Let me sum up its merit and demerits seperately:

Merits:

* The Institutes reputation is recoganized worldwide.
* The IIT tag which may bring laural to you.
* The interdisciplinary approach makes your oppurtunity wider so that you can venture into any field that pleases you (within the bounds of MMST syllabi)
* Pursuing MMST makes you a post graduate
* Opportunity to undergo Training programs in Industries/ R&D labs/ reputed institutes & hospitals both in Indian and abroad.
* An assistantship of 10000/ month.
* Working in B.C Roy Tech hospital for 6-8 hrs / week.
* 24 X 7 hrs free internet facility.
* An opportunity to make an attractive CV in case you decided to go for PhD.
* A spectrum of opportunity to explore yourself in various walks of life - sports, elocation, drama, quiz, facility to learn foreign language (German, French), etc- it is the way IITians live.
* Areas you may specialize in - are as is mentioned by "funky_doc" previously.

Demerits:

* Mind it, you are Doctors and this course totally alienates you from medicine wherein you had been nurtured for about 5.5 years.
* The current scope for MMST in India is practically nil.
* This is an Engineering institute and the quality of life for doctors is not so conducive at IIT.
* The subjects by itself are very well structured and are the need of the hour but the way it is handled by some faculties are pretty awkward. Also the curricula is not set keeping medicos in mind and any modification in curriculum is made by the Senate committee who knows no shit about medicine neither they get FEEDBACK from medical scientist working in those frontier areas (If at all they gets any FEEDBACK , it is from those private practitioners practising at Kolkota who again don't know what research is!).
* Excpet few, the quality of staff in IIT, particularly those handling MMSTians are awfully horrible. They themselves don't know what should be taught taking into consideration the need of hour.
* Only one core faculty is attached with MMST while the rest are hired from other departments. HOD doesn't handles any subject for MMSTians.
* No direct help from the department to procure your training project and you have to slog on your own to make your way. Well you don't need a spoon feed but atleast a guidance for orienting your plans is a must which is lacking seriously in this prestigious school of Medical science and technology. Ofcourse they will give recommendation letter for you on demand but won't recommend prior to a positive gesture from the firm or institute for which you have to struggle (and above all your luck must favour you to get the kind of project which you are interested in).
* Buddy, the so called technology hospital is no more that a gaint PHC wherein you can't even imagine to apply your clinical judgement while dealing with patients or expand your medical knowledge (this is a hospital which is getting a grant of 3 crore annually and if you see the service rendered here, it is pathetic); what you will be doing is referring cases with even slight severity to State run hospitals nearby. You will be treating only CCF (cough, cold & fever) as mentioned by someone earlier here in someother thread.
* The prospectus/ brouchre of MMST is a big humbug - ofcourse all the facilities cum instruments mentioned in the information brouchre exists in IIT but in other departments.
* After passing out, for fear of security, you must take up a PhD (again you have to spend 5 yrs (i.e) 5.5 + 3 + 5 = 13.5 yrs after your school life ==> Your settlement can be looked up optimistically only by the age of 32 yrs).
* After PhD? again the same question lingers - what next?
* You can land up in Post doc. fellowship (PDF), but it is only a temporary position.
* Even after 6 years of its existence, the Head of Training & Placement cell in IIT says that he don't know where an MMSTian can be fit in w.r.t MNC/ industrial Job opportunity - I mean to say, the course as such is not streamlined from day one of its existence and the IIT staffs doesn't care a shit of it. I think IIT being a reputed institution they started MMST just for sake of starting an interdisciplinary course so as to claim that they are the poineer in this issue in India, playing with the future of potential medical candidates. To me it seems the course is started with no felt need (lest by now some avenues should be open for its candidates).

The Potential danger which will creep on is you will be losing your medical knowledge all through this 3 years and if due to some or other reason if you prefers to go back to medicine, you will be an impotent with regard to medical knowledge and you must be dare to face the gross reality.

To put it all in a nut shell:

This course is meant for
-Those who lost faith and interest in conventional medicine,
-Those who have a fascination for multidisciplinary activities,
-Those who considers them to be into research or have an aptitude for it,
-Those who are crazy about settling down abroad (Being freed of problem that one will usually face when gone for USMLE , PLAB , etc.. i.e. visa, funding, and litigation fear),
-Those who want to have a masters degree attached as a suffix to their name,
-And lastly (but not the least), who are crazy in making money but determined to settle abroad.

Of late, now there is really a ray of hope emerges in a big way for MMSTians. To throw a glance on it:

# Some companies are now considering students of MMST to work with them - Phillips medical division had provided junior research scientist position for one of the recently passed out Student.
# MOU (memorandum of understanding) is being established with prestigious institute in India and in Abroad.
# There is a recent increase in core faculty member from 1 to 4.
# Recruitment of MMSTians into certain other companies are in pipeline.

All this is a favourable gesture for Aspirants of MMST . The time has not matured fully, but on one fine day this course will be a BIGGGGGGGGGGGG HIT when all the qualms associated with it are mowed down. Industries are on their way to recruit MMST students. Even otherwise, if you finishes PhD, you may find your way into state-of-art R&D labs or world class institutes ( NUS Singapore, Carnegie Mellon Univ. USA, Illinois univ. USA, Kyoto univ. Japan, NTU Taiwan, Leeds Univ. UK are few to mention wherein many MMSTians are doing PhD) as Research scientist/ PDF with handsome salary (don't compare the pay for JRFs in India). And if your work is innovative, who knows, you may one day turn out to be a Nobel Laurate. Well, rest I am leaving as a touchstone for you to decide your own predelictions and preferences. Happy seeing you all. Bye

Quick Scroll 03.12.07 (1 year ago) #2

Hello all,
I prefer to differ from my earlier mail here:

The outlook of MMST had started changing in the recent past. Till 5 months back, everyone at smst are skeptical about the course and found their future bleak. But these days, everybody's perspective had changed, thanks to MNC's entry. Currently MMST has been recognized in the field of imaging by top seeded companies like Phillips, Siemens & agfa. Few medical informatics firms too recognizes MMST and considers MMSTians for their one year training and at the successful completion of training, it offers the possibility of recruitment. For sure these MNC will pay a handsome package.
There are certain radical changes being introduced at the department too. The school expands both in space and faculty number exponentially. About 12 labs encampassing various research fields are to be set up in the department. Proposal for a multispeciality research hospital is on the way and is speculated to be materialized in a span of 2 years. It is foreseen that gradually companies involved in other areas too will join the band wagon. Now, I believe is the best time to consider MMST (but exercise caution... you should forgo your medical degree once you associate yourself with MMST ). Gone are those days where people from MMST cribs to find a position in some foreign research laboratories and universities. It is strongly decried at smst these days to go abroad for reason whatsoever. That avenue of finding a platform in abroad is altogather scrapped from smst history, but newer avenues within India had opened. I believe, many more MNC will follow the suit and it is high for MMST to be a big hit.

regards
