Hi friends.
I completed my MBBS in 2004 and worked in a hospital for 2 years in India.Now i wish to take USMLE
exams but i am very apprehensive(heard that old IMGS dont get into rsidency prog) about getting success becoz i wont be ready fr the match before 2010-11(6-7 years after graduation).What should i do to increase my chances(which look minimal now) of gettin matched?
Does a short(6 mths) research experience outside US in field of Genetics(Germany -as my husband is working here) would help me??I shall be highly grateful if u can help me as i am in a depressed state of mind.

Old IMGs have trouble specially if they weren't doing research or a PG but its not impossible for them to get into a residency. Rather they have a reasonable chance albeit less than a fresh graduate.
The same general rules apply to all, good scores, USCE, USLORs, publications, contacts etc are important. Try to get the maximum on your CV, plan well and understand the system properly. Its a tough road but achievable. Go through dipsite's Double 99 thread for discussion on the system.
Family medicine and Psychiatry
are less competitive, so you can target them as a backup. Read through the hot discussion in the forum, they'll help you give a good idea of various aspects of USMLE

thanks...wud a 'clinical research 'be better than human genetics???
Also is there any value of LOR from a German Professor who has publications in 'nature' magazine.....?I cant go to US atleast fr 2 years(family prob)...m trying to make a long term plan .....with my target as residency in internal medicine/Paediatrics

Well if we think logically... Usually programs don't do a Pubmed search on the LOR writer so how would they know that the German physician is such a big gun! Thats just a logical thought, we can never be sure... But still it'll be better than an Indian LOR. Usually they prefer an LOR from somone who has seen you work in 'clinical medicine in US health system'. I hope you get my point.
Working under a big gun outside US can be of major help if:
- He has strong contacts in US which can give you an IV or even a residency slot
- You get good publications, preferably as first or second author
Otherwise working with any doctor outside US won't change your fortunes big time.
There is difference of opinion about which research is better. Still, majority feel clinical research hold more value than basic sciences research.
Since you can't go to US, i'd suggest that work on whatever research that has more chances of getting you publications. Work hard on your steps and get good scores. Get some USCE whenever its possible. If you can do all that, you can get into good programs in US.

Hi friends
I'm a very old graduate I did my MBBS from Pakistan in the year 1998 After that Imoved to Doha and coz of unavaibility of any option to go for residency or research and coz of some medical problems I decided to start my family first.Now I am a mother of three kids and i wanna to restart my career but I am very confused where to start .Everybody arround me are giving different advices that further increase my confusion and making me depressed too .Kindly help me

There is no age limit to appear for the USMLE
exams so cheer up and start studying !!!

There is no age limit for many things. Does this mean that anything can be started anytime??
