Hi BGM,
Just wondering... Cos I've checked the spam mails and most of it were sent to an email address with the same first few letters as mine.
Eg. XXXXXX.XXXX at gmail.com -- if this is my email
The spam is sent to: XXXXXX.123 at gmail.com or XXXXXX.XX1234 at gmail.com
So, why do I receive it even though it's not my exact address??

Thats whats called a "Dictionary Attack" Spamming. Spammers use special softwares to automatically send mass emails to user names that are very common and user names which are from the dictionary.
Its like this, the spammer enters a common user names like AdamSmith at gmail.com , musiclover at hotm ail.com (etc) inside the software and leaves. The software sends the mail automatically to AdamSmith1 at gmail.com, AdamSmith2 at gmail.com,Adam1Smith at gmail.com, musiclover1 at hotm ail.com, musiclover2 at hotm ail.com so n so n so.. Using the common names they send out thousands of mass emails.
The only solution is, when we choose an e mail address, it should be an uncommon non dictionary name.
The tricks spammers use are too complex.
You can find more info on it here,

Hi BGM,
How about for gmail? I get lots of spam mails too. It's in a separate Spam folder, but I just get tired of clearing it up all the time!
Thanks.

Here's the solution Nic, Sorry for delay..
I came to know about this solution now only.
HIDE SPAM COUNTERS IN GMAIL
If you are receiving too much spam in your Gmail, you can hide that spam counter.
i.e the "Spam" counter wont show up so that you won't be notified of any new spam mails.
Here's how to do it. You need to have Firefox first.
Go to the Mozilla add-on "Customize Google"
| Code: |
Install it, Restart firefox.
(Customize google adds a lot of functions into your firefox)
Go to "Tools" select "Addons"
Click on "Customize Google" and select "Options"
The Go to the "Gmail" option and tick "Hide the spam counter"
From now on your "Spam" heading in Gmail wont show up as "Spam(1)" when a new spam message arrives.
...

Nice tip BGM! I don't like seeing the number of spams I get, so this will be a good tool to hide it! Now I wonder if there's an automatic delete-the-spam-as-it-arrives tool...LOL!
