what is the relative importance given for the step scores on one hand and US clinical experience or research on the other hand?
for example what is the scope for an IMG who scores 99 percentile in both steps but has minimal USCE and no research experience??

Scores matter a lot but i's put them at around 50% of the whole story of USMLE . 99ers may bite dust if they don't get other factors right.

Your second question is a HIGHLY open ended question, to which no one can provide an answer. Nobody can delineate you scope unless he knows thousand other details, target branch etc etc etc. Even then its extremely difficult to quantify.

thanks for the reply..
by the way how easy is it to get an observership in US??
is it again based on the scores or on influence??
by the way i am targeting for surgery..
one last question -- is it POSSIBLE to enter a good program with just good scores? have people done it before?

Currently Observerships are very difficult to get. See the thread on Externships by tinkerbell for detailed info. Of course contacts work ALWAYS.

I'd say getting into a good program with just good scores is very difficult with current level of competition, unless you are extremely lucky or have very good contacts. Try to work on all factors.

I just read the article by AshB on getting into a residency. You have spoken about contacts required getting USCE. Can u help people like me who dont happen to have contacts in US through rxpg??
I am asking this question a bit too early as i am leaving for US only in august for step 2 cs.. but as they say the sooner the better..
