Vagus; Tenth Nerve Pneumogastric Nerve)------------------------
The vagus nerve is composed of both motor and sensory fibers, and has a more extensive course and distribution than any of the other cranial nerves, since it passes through the neck and thorax to the abdomen. The branches of distribution of the vagus are: 12
In the Jugular Fossa… Meningeal.
Auricular.
In the Neck………… Pharyngeal.
Superior laryngeal.
Recurrent.
Superior cardiac.
In the Thorax………. Inferior cardiac.
Anterior bronchial.
Posterior bronchial.
Esophageal.
In the Abdomen……. Gastric.
Celiac.
Hepatic. The Auricular Branch (ramus auricularis; nerve of Arnold)Traversing the substance of the temporal bone, it crosses the facial canal about 4 mm. above the stylomastoid foramen, and here it gives off an ascending branch which joins the facial nerve.
The internal branch (ramus internus) are distributed to the epiglottis, the base of the tongue, and the epiglottic glands; others pass backward, in the aryepiglottic fold, to supply the mucous membrane surrounding the entrance of the larynx.
VAGUS NERVE IS MIXED NERVE MEANS IT SHOULD BE MOTOR & SENSORY BOTH. INTERNAL BRANCH SUPPLY THE BASE OF TONGUE BUT IT PASSES ABOVE THE STYLOMASTOID FORAMEN . THEREFORE ACCORDING TO ME ACCEPT D ALL R CORRECT.
IF I M WRONG PLS CORRECT ME.

Vagus nerve - True or false

Clinically Oriented Anatomy
, 5th Edition – Keith Moore Section 9 – Summary of Cranial Nerves
Vagus (CN X) It arises by a series of rootlets from the lateral aspect of the medulla that merge and leave the cranium through the jugular foramen
Functions: Sensory (general somatic afferent, special visceral afferent, general visceral afferent), motor (special visceral efferent), and parasympathetic (general visceral efferent).
Branchial motor - Motor to constrictor muscles of pharynx (except stylopharyngeus), intrinsic muscles of larynx, muscles of palate (except tensor veli palatini), and striated muscle in superior two thirds of esophagus
Visceral motor – Parasympathetic innervation to smooth muscle of trachea, bronchi, digestive tract, and cardiac muscle of heart
Visceral sensory - Visceral sensation from base of tongue, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, heart, esophagus, stomach, and intestine to left colic flexure
Special sensory - Taste from epiglottis and palate
General sensory - Sensation from auricle, external acoustic meatus, and dura mater of posterior cranial fossa
Sagging of soft palate; deviation of uvula to normal side; hoarseness owing to paralysis of vocal fold are caused by Brainstem Lesion or deep laceration of neck damaging the Vagus.
Hypoglossal (CN XII) Motor to intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of tongue (except palatoglossus which is supplied by the Vagus and though called a nominal extrinsic tongue muscle, the palatoglossus, is actually a palatine muscle based on its derivation and innervation)
Hence only the option “it is a mixed nerve” is correct. All other options are false.
