I agree that AVG is good but Let me add some points..
I have used almost all Anti-Virus solutions (Free and Pro) during these years,
AVG is good, but Grisoft is turning their back on the free version.
AVG 8 is out and it doesn't have a free component.
It means no more Program Updates for the AVG Free version.
They will continue to provide Virus definition updates only.
One thing i hate about AVG is the lack of regular updates.
Now a days new viruses are emerging every hour and AVG doesn't offer daily updates.
AVG is very kind on the RAM though.

I have been on a low end pc till last month (256MB RAM) and i have tried running Kaspersky or McAfee on it. They used to slow the PC terribly. I will explain, Windows XP SP2 will use atleast 40% of the RAM. So in a 256MB PC we are left with 150MB. Out of it Kaspersky will use 40MB. So we are left with 110MB. A custom firewall (eg:comodo) will use ~20MB RAM. So 90MB remains. Firefox uses 50-100MB to run. So no free memory remains after opening firefox. This causes the PC to slow down terribly.

Finally i upgraded my RAM to 512MB and now i can run all these together.
Still my RAM runs out when i open Google Earth, Picasa and Firefox together.
