Quick Scroll singapore dream-TRUE PICTURE 03.23.08 (5 months ago) #1

hi all
i am an indian medical graduate from delhi and am working in singapore for 6 months now as a medical officer in a general hospital
lately as all know the indian degrees have been recognised and people are rushing to singapore in search of a future.i was among the first few to come over here.
after working for 6 months now i realised the following
1-the growth potential is zero.they are hiring because they want indian doctors to work as medical officers/family doctors, and their local doctors to undergo specialise training.the Basic Specialist Training is given 99 percent to doctors who are singaporeans.
2-the basic sallery is around S[no ads please] 3500-S[no ads please] 3800,and grossly it becomes around 5500,to survive here alone S[no ads please] 1500 is ok,but if ur married it becomes S[no ads please] 2500,
3-the work culture is a major problem, this is a chinese dominated society and people dont mix up easily, even other resident doctors-nobody asks you to come out for lunch during the work break- u feel left out and mistreated.
4-langauge problems-we indians from delhi can speak fluent english but the local people can only speak in mandarin, chinese, tamil, malay, cantonese, hoikken etc-so it feels like shit clerking the case and u have to ask the nurse to help you out,who also shows her mood swings
5-the work load is too heavy and back breaking-my work starts at 7.30 so i leave my place at 7 am.it ends after the evening rounds at around 8-8.30pm.it makes sense to work die hard if ur doing pg otherwise whats the crap for.
6-u have to do 4 calls in a month atleast for which ur paid extra S[no ads please] 250 per call, but the calls are also very heavy and it requires working for 36 hrs in a go.on public holidays when local docs take a break,u are expected to come and work as u have nowhere to go and nothing better to do.no choice either.
7-and the worst part, they can sack/fire u up any time and the contract means nothing.they can just pay u one month salary in liu notice and ask u to resign .even if u complete 1 year here they might ask u to clear MRCP /UK exam which is as good as or as tough as taking a USMLEexam.
so here is the true picture from the hospitals in singapore SGH/CGH/TTSH/KK/ALEXANDRA/NUH-all are same
i have known doctors from MAMC/AIIMS /CMC -going back in a months time after joining becuse of any of the reasons
and for those u think u can use singapore as a stepping stone for Australia /Canada /usa/uk-ur mistaken.u wont get any time after working 15 hrs daily to even dust ur books.
i am open to all questions..but respond only if ur genuinely interested.

ok u have to tell me from which college in india are u graduating
check out the Singapore Medical Council site, and u will find a list of all the medical colleges that is recognised here.
next step u have to apply to NHG/SINGHEALTH as these are the only two health clusters here and give employment
u will be offered the post of a MO/FAMILY DOCTOR once u clear their exam and telephonic interview which is not so difficult
then u can come and work over here
as for Dermatology ,i am not sure cause i never met any indian doctor who was pursuing it in singapore,so not very sure
int medicine is very heavy and so is surgery but the polyclinic are easier and u r just required to run opd and moreover no calls.
so try to look for ur degree if its recognised and then an employer

You have aptly summarised the scenario of Singapore !

The fact that they are now even coming to India to recruit doctors shows their desperation. And they only offer those branches that their locals are not picking up. It would be impossible for someone from India to pick up Ophtha or ENT as they are the most paying fields !

most people ask 1 question....about doing PG from here
but let me tell u one thing........
there is a long que ahead of u,no seat for BST/AST that is the basic and advanced specialist training is ever offered to a foreigner/indian
i know people who are post MD WITH 3-4 yr experience from india and they are still doing MO/FAMILY DOCToR after 4 years of work in singapore.isnt this a total waste of time.ur only left with some experience and some amount of money but nothing to add to ur CV.so finally they are not left with no choice but to leave.and if u plan MRCP /MRCS ,u can only become a registrar/SR after 6 years of work as medical officer.
so i would rather say that this is not at all a good place for indian doctors and this decision i am still regreting.
i have seen many SRs from delhi working as MO in various hospitals in singapore.they have done MD in a Anaesthesia ,paeds or medicine
and then doing MO thing here.some SRs have left already because its no point again starting a PG1st yr life here when u have no hope to be a registrar before 6 years of back breaking service here in s'pore.
and the best part if ur game to living a GHETTO life ,ur welcome .

Quick Scroll illtreatment of indian docs in singapore 04.22.08 (4 months ago) #6

i am also a medical graduate from delhi and i fully agree to what you have written in your post.the people in the dept is not at all friendly and you feel useless stress all the time.and then moreover u work under scrutiny and even the nurses and paramedics have to rate ur work.thats total shit.
but now that they are getting DM /MCh /post sr/sr for the MO/FAMILY DOCTOR post...it clearly explains why suddenly they started acting so pricey.
one thing which i really dont understand is ,when the govt is showing that there is acute shortage of staff and medical manpower then why arent they provididng proper working condition to doctors from the best indian institutions.
the reason to this is that there is no co-ordination between the hiring body that is the medical manpower and the hospitals where the doctors are deployed.and they clearly get away saying that you will be posted in the "area of need"
its gross blunder if ur hiring a DM and an intern from the same institution and for the same post of MO/FAMILY DOCTOR and then you also expect that they should perform equally and give the same output in work.the point is that these [bleep] dont understand is that medicine isnt about reading harrisons but its about experience and that how exposed you have been in the past...your years of practice.
in a similar manner if an intern posted as MO in TTSH gen surgery is asked and expected to do minor operations independently, then i dont think he can find it easy.whereas a post sr in surgery who is also working as a mo can easily do it.
so this is a gross blunder that they are making and i think it should be brought to the notice of the INDIAN HIGH COMISSION in singapore.the ill treatment of indian doctors is a major issue and i would request all the mos/family doctors to post their opinions so that more people dont fall prey to these people like us.

Dear amb,
Is it not possible for an Indian doc like me to appear for M.Med primary exam? What is the exact flow chart for M.Med? Should we necessarily work there before taking on the M.Med exam? Plz explain as me and my friend were solely banking on this exam!!

as for MMed i dont have much idea, but i am sure that MRCP is more accepted here.but u cant get the post of registrar straight on clearing ur MRCP .u need to work atleast for 6 years as a MO/family doc to be promoted to a reg post.MMed and GDFM are not of so much importance as compared to MRCP ,UK..these can be of importance if one plans to start a pp.
but its an irony that even their own degrees and diplomas arent recognised and one cant be promoted based on these qualifications.
