Registration process for Doctors in U A E

Every now and then we can find new posts in this forum regarding the registration process for doctors in UAE, MOH/DOH/HAAD exams, books etc etc. Having found out a bit on these aspects by direct approach I would like to share it here at RxPG for the benefit of others and my ownself.
REGISTRATION & EXAMS
Exams:DOH - For Dubai(Only interviews)
HAAD - For Abudhabi (Written-MCQ based + Interviews)
MOH - For the remaining Emirates (Written-MCQ based + Interviews)
Eligibility
For GP's - DOH = 4 years of experience after graduation (ofcourse excluding internship).
MOH = 2 years of experience after graduation.
For Specialists - 3 years of experience in the speciality after post graduation.
You can approach the DOH either via a sponsor with a job offer (in which case there are more chances of clearing the exam, or you can approach directly. For MOH you have to Register for the exams which are held every 2 months. There is a max attempt of 3. Exam for GP's is more or less on the lines of MRCP
-1.
Books for preparation : OHCM + OHCS + Family practise by Swanson (Some also say about Kaplan notes). One also needs to have a sound knowledge of XRays, ECG's and emergencies.
For more info :
JOB SCENARIO & PAY SCALE
The job scenario is very tough in Dubai since there are a lot of GP's who are well established finding a job is very very difficult. Pay is either commission based or salary for a definite income generated + commission. Abudhabi and the rest of the Emirates is easier in terms of finding jobs since there are a lot of clinics. But the pay scale is very poor and keeping in mind the cost of living, its almost impossible for a Doctor to survive without some backing. If you can invest in setting up your own clinic (cost ranges from Rs. 20-30 lakhs for a moderate clinic) then there is a bit of chance especially in the developing parts of UAE.
Situation is totally different if you have MRCP
/MRCS
/MRCPCH
etc/Board certifications of US, Germany, Arab Board etc in which case your salary is almost 3 times that of a postgraduate from India, Pakistan etc. Private practise is almost non-existent. Working hours are also hectic, 8 hours a day, 6 times a week. Getting into Ministry hospitals or Corporate hospitals is again difficult without western qualifications.
These are some of the facts that I gathered. I request all of you to post relevant info regarding this topic. And to those who have queries, please read through the various threads in this forum before posting, since its totally useless writing the same things over and over again.
I welcome any suggestions/corrections.

Schedule of MOH exams for 2008
|
03.31.08 (6 months ago)

The schedule for MOH GP exams for this year is as follows : (omitting the exams already completed)
Written exam Oral Exam
05\05\2008 08\05\2008
07\07\2008 10\07\2008
01\09\2008 04\09\2008
03\11\2008 06\011\2008
Specialist exams are also held every 2 months after the GP exams. Registration process for the exams start 4 days prior to the exam and end a day before the exam. The forms would be available 4 days before the respective exams from the MOH office. During the time of registering for the exams the certificates (attested) as told in the website (www.moh.gov.ae) should be produced. The results of those who clear the written exam are informed via phone and they are asked to appear for the oral exams. The final results are usually declared 1-2 weeks after the oral exam and is displayed on the website and also at the MOH office.
Should one clear the written exam and fail to make it through the orals then during the next attempt he/she needs to appear only for the Oral exam. There is a max attempt of 3 after which you can never again appear for the said category exam. After passing both the parts, MOH provides an Evaluation certificate using which one has to approach a suitable employer for jobs. The clinic then applies for the license and you get the license valid for 1 year, it has to be renewed every year. If one fails to find an employer within 3 months then his evaluation ceritficate becomes null and void and he has to go through the exam process again.
Heard the written exam is usually easy and its the Oral/Viva at which people fail. However if you apply for the specialist category then both the written and Oral exam is easy. Its so very difficult to extract info out of the MOH office. Its not at all friendly. The DOH office is very helpful and they answer all your queries, the only drawback is that you have to approach them in person.
Hope this helps. I request all the other aspirants to share their views.
