The latest planning commission report says that India is short of six lakh doctors. But that doesn't seem to bother Maharashtra .

The state has reduced seats in post-graduate medical courses like Paediatrics , preventive and social medicine in government colleges by nearly one-third this year. That is because the state's medical education directorate has failed to get the seats recognised by the Medical Council of India.

This classic case of tardiness has shocked medical students in Maharashtra . About 242 of the students aspiring to take up post graduate medical studies in government colleges could be left out this year.

Because the DMER, the state's medical education directorate has failed to get the mandatory recognition for the seats from the Medical Council of India.

The seats have fallen off the MCI's map because DMER did not comply with MCI rules, mostly for not having enough teachers.

The premier medical colleges of Maharashtra are facing seat reduction. Only 3 of the last year's 48 seats are available in the Indira Gandhi medical college Nagpur. In Mumbai's KEM college nearly half the seats have fallen off the list. JJ hospital has only 47 seats to offer this year.

Besides, if these seats are not filled by 31st May this year, they will lapse. But the state says they will do all possible effort to ensure these seats are filled.

There has been a systematic decrease in the number of post graduate medical seats in Maharashtra . Students say that from 1900 seats in 2001, they are reduced to merely 411 this year. This means less and less qualified doctors for a bulging population
