Kindly post the make/model number of the laptop.
Laptop usually shuts down automatically as a 'self protecting' mechanism. Overheating is one of the most common causes. Perhaps the laptop fan is malfunctioning....Check if the fan is running by keeping your hand in front of the vent.... usually below and behind the laptop... you should be getting hot air coming out and if not... something might be wrong.
Some BIOS include details of the fan speed and temperature of the processor... you need to press <DEL> or appropriate key mentioned in boot screen that allows you to enter bios and 'view' the settings.
Statutory warning:
DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE BIOS...without knowing what is causing the problem and it might render the computer unbootable!
Another reason why it shuts down could be related to the operating system. Kindly mention what you mean by "during d boot process". Do you see the "WINDOWS" screen that shows that the Operating system is loading? Or do you mean before that even?

Before you try anything fancyful:-
REMOVE all dust from all vents of the laptop computer.... using a low powered vaccuum cleaner ideally.
Does the problem occur not only during booting but sometimes while you are working too?
I also forgot to ask what Operating System and version do you use?
If you are running windows, remember to update including patches. There is said to be a virus called SASSER that does something similar to what you have mentioned... shutting down randomly.
There are patches available from Microsoft including the removal tool, I guess. A google search will do the trick if this is the issue. Installing that patch and trying the virus removal tool will anyway NOT harm your computer. It might do you good atleast that if you are not already infected that patch will help protect you from future infections.
I am not sure if vista systems are susceptible etc; I am not a windows user anymore and hence don't consider myself up to date in that regard though I can indeed give you some help if time permits etc;
I am trying but, obviously, I cannot 'treat'/'diagnose' the problems of a system that is remote from me

I asked for the model and make of the laptop too!
If you mention that, I could help you enter BIOS. Nevertheless when you press the "on" button and you get a 'blank' screen or with logo .. look at the bottom. There are instructions like "press F4" or "press del" to enter bios or something similar. Try to press the appropriate key. You might have to restart before you try it.
Have you ever tried to reinstall windows? I also mentioned about SASSER virus which you should try to remove and install the necessary patches perhaps. Google for SASSER and go to the Microsoft site links that come up and you'd come up with the patch required.
Did the problem start after you installed any particular program or software? If so, remove that software/program.

Moreover... the fan is running properly, of course but are the vents working? Are they clogged? Is anything preventing the air from being vented out?
