Measurement of Antimicrobial Activity
Determination of the susceptibility of a bacterial pathogen to antimicrobial drugs can be done by one of two principal methods: dilution or diffusion. It is important to use a standardized method that controls for all the factors that affect antimicrobial activity; in the United States, the tests are performed according to the methods of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) (formerly the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards [NCCLS]).
