You are a surgery resident doing rotations, now in orthopaedics Department. One of senior specialists requests your help for an intervention, the fourth in that day for that surgeon, after he's been on call a night before.During the procedure,as you were closing,he was annoyed by an unappropriate gesture you made, and hits you with a retractor. The nurse in the OR saw the incident ,but turned her head the other way and didn't make any comment.
What will you do next?

Yes,cafe,I agree,so far so good. But you'll be surprised(or maybe not!) to see that the moment you ask him for an explanation,he could ask you if you want some more....This could trigger a "storm".
And then what?

this is an act of assault, if you want to sue him, but I think by going through the proper channel we should involve the third opinion of maybe the chief of staffs. Then the clarifications and doubts will be cleared also with a room for apology.

I think that Head of Department and Hospital Chief of Staff should be informed immediately.Furthermore, an investigation of the case should be promptly initiated for clarifications, and the surgeon suspended until further notice.

adrian u could be right in saying all this but never mention this infront of the examiner as investigations and suspention are to be delt by the dept and we sould not be judgemental in this case.... hope u get my point
