Quick Scroll Embarking on a tough job -- USMLE after Senior Residency 09.20.08 (2 months ago) #1

Calendar Event: September 20, 2008 - January 24, 2009

Dear RxPG Team,

I am practising Surgeon after 3 years of Senior Residency in a govt hospital.

I am starting a new thread today wherein I will keep posting my preparation details for USMLE part 1 every day. This is to serve the dual purpose of keeping a tab on myself so that I keep up my pace and that of routine discussions with like minded people and their comments and suggestions.

I hope this traditoinal method of study combined with resources and networking of RxPG would benefit all of us.

Quick Scroll 1 st day 1st show 09.21.08 (2 months ago) #2

Dear RxPG,

Studied for four hours today. Frankly i had been thinking/ discussing/ evaluating things for over a month now, but have been able to piece together the nitty gritty and focus on the task ahead today only.

I was on call and had to stay in the hospital. Made good use of the breaks in between my emergency work and rounds. Lady luck prevailed and could study ~ 1 to 1.5 hour each time. Slept at 2 AM and continued with work till 10 AM. Hope all my duties give me time enough like this.

Luckily for me, I can study on the fly. I know many of us are working and studying for some or the other exams. Time is usually at a constraint coz u have to do duties also. In surgery, it means changing your mindset from work-work-work to study-study-study at a moments notice and vice versa.

Tasks completed today-------- Kaplans' How to prepare for STEP-1. Will put sum ideas into practise from today.

Gung--Ho !!!

---------------------SUNDAY--------2 DAYS BACK----------------

Had to leave for sum urgent family work. Could not study at all. I wanted to organise folders and books today and start on studies seriously. Sadly I wasted whole of today. I will be on call tomorrow. will try to make up a bit.

---------------------MONDAY--------MY CALL DAY

Was on call. Did not get time from 9-3 But I stole 3 hours up to 6 and finished 2 tests -- Anatomy and Physiology part1 each from Kaplan Q book. It was nice to see that I could still answer 50-60 % questions each. It was also disheartening to note that a lot of theory has been wiped off completely. Need to develop sum fundamentals afresh and need to revise others again.

But I am pretty sure of one thing ----- this exam is gonna be fun to crack !! I have always been a rapid learner. And I have learnt today's theory ( heyyyy i revised the explanations also icon_smile.gif ) VIva USMLE it is only a matte r of time before I come cracking icon_wink.gif

Alrms are meant to be snoozed off till u find u have no more time to sleep icon_redface.gif . I KNOW I can only study as long as I am awake. Coffee or no coffee icon_arrow.gif, I MUST study till I can and then doze off for good.

Arre Bhai icon_confused.gif , It is the night call effect which wont allow proper use of next day as well. But then It is the coffee that will save my day.

Sadly each hour wasted is a golden hour icon_arrow.gif Time and Tide are not an my side.

Buck up ol guy till u use every bit of time icon_eek.gif

I am likely to use today in form of a neat 5 hours . Let us see how icon_wink.gif

Thanks dabs

Trying to update as frequently as I can. It does become a matter of stealing time from under the nose of your job !!

Did fluids and dynamics today. Thank goodness to Dr. Agnihotri, my physics teacher who had instilled good reasoning coupled with simplistic maths as a foundation for my Physics---------------I sail through most questions. Score on Kaplan's Q book ------- 74 %. Will test myself against NBME and USMLE world later icon_cool.gif

Did not study much yesterday. I have fallen into a sort of routine though. Mostly I do MCQs at hospital and Text at home. But I am on call today. I hope to polish off all of the related theory for Earlier physio topics. Will update on results tomorrow

Hafta rush now --- time to get ready and drive 1.5 hours to work icon_sad.gif

Bye icon_rolleyes.gif
