Is it peripheral smear or peripheral count?
Estimation of Hb and PCV are the same and will only help in quantification of anemia.
RBC count may help differentiate a hemolytic process from a deficiency/reduced production by the marrow.
I think in any anemia, red cell indices with a good peripheral blood film examination will provide a good branching point from where on various offshoots could be derived.
