Hello grandmaster,
You can take Diploma & different Degree or even Degrees in 2 branches for that matter, but MCI doesn't allow simultaneous practice in 2 subjects, so you've to give up one of them, after all that! One of our colleagues did MD Medicine+DVD, but he practices only as a Dermatologist!
Many Universities don't permit doctors to do another MD, but NBE permits them to do DNB in another subject even if they already have a Degree in 1 subject! However when it comes to practice, they've to choose 1 subject!
One interesting exceptional case was of a colleague who wanted to do DM Respiratory Medicine after MD Medicine, but MD Chest Medicine group did not see a need for DM & felt that DTB+MD Chest Medicine were adequate for Indian set up!Mumbai University was forced to cancel DM registration that was already done by then, so as a special case, they allowed her to do MD Chest Medicine! However, she continued in Medicine till retirement.

Yes, @asha, this was and stil probably is the case..
But,
I have some info that in a recent review, simultaneous registrationn and practice of two diferent branches , that is one diploma and another degree is allowed.. this was by oral communication from one of the official of the RGUHS, Bangalore.. If any one can throw additional light in this regard... Thanks
