Non-EU seven-year licensees urged to seek full licenses immediately

by Donal Bergin

Non-EU doctors whose seven years of temporary registration is nearing an end must apply for full registration immediately or else face losing their right to practice medicine here, the Medical Council has warned.

Around 100 non-EU doctors – around 60 in Anaesthesia and around 40 in Psychiatry – will run out of temporary registration by the end of December, and last week, the Council met with the IMO on the situation.

Council President Prof Gerard Bury said the recent change in legislation would only offer protection to doctors who had applied for full registration, as their registration would continue until their application had been decided by the Council.

Some doctors were deferring applying due to the uncertainty over certificates of general professional training being issued from the College of Anaesthetists and the Irish Psychiatric Training Committee, he told IMN.

Following the meeting last week, Prof Bury said the Council would now be seeking to consult with the College of Anaesthetists and the IPTC on the issue, and to clarify what the status of issuing the certificates was with both training bodies.

After the meeting, Non-EU psychiatrists said they were postponing their legal action on the issue and, along with non-EU anaesthetists, said the Council was extending registration for the affected doctors by six months.

However, Prof Bury said the legislation only meant temporary registration could continue once an application for full registration had been made, and if a doctor failed, they would be allowed to finish out their period of existing registration.
