The Foundation Programme is a two-year training programme for new doctors and will start in August 2005. It incorporates the PRHO year and first year of SHO training. The programme will enable trainee doctors to gain competences in core clinical skills, as well as other professional skills such as teamworking and communication. Doctors will be assessed throughout the two year period to explicit standards, which are set out in the Curriculum for the Foundation Years in Postgraduate Education and Training.
Why is the Foundation Programme being introduced?
This programme has been introduced to address some of the issues which arose from an evaluation of the senior house officer grade, including inadequate supervision, assessment, appraisal and career advice with no defined end-point to training.
Who is responsible for delivering/overseeing the programme?
The General Medical Council (GMC) and Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) will be responsible for the approval and quality assurance of the first and second years of the Foundation Programme respectively. Deaneries will be responsible for implementing and managing the programmes through foundation schools.
