Tips to be prepared!
  • Familiarise yourself with the applications timetable and keep this in mind when planning holidays etc
  • Think about how to provide evidence of your competences – e.g. FP portfolio, workplace assessments, log book, clinical observations, records of in-training assessments etc.
  • Make sure you have a working e-mail account
  • Think about your referees and ask if they are prepared to write on your behalf
  • Think about when you want to start – deferred start only allowed for recognised research

  • Online applications commence:
  • Made via www.mtas@nhs.org.uk
  • Applicants must have an e-mail address for correspondence
  • Specialty trainees will be able to apply for two specialty groups and two units of application (UoA) for each specialty
  • GP trainees will only apply to one UoA since this has a national coordination system
  • Applicants will need to supply the names and e-mail addresses of two referees

  • Shortlists confirmed:
  • Short-listing to be undertaken by local panels
  • Applications will be scored against national, specialty-specific criteria
  • Applicants will be notified of shortlist outcomes and invited to interviews via MTAS
  • Applicants must confirm their attendance at a selection interview by specified time
  • References will be requested for shortlisted applicants
March - April 2007
  • The interview selection process commences:
  • Interviews for selection will be a 30 minute, structured interview as a minimum standard
  • Interviews will be held locally with local selection panels
  • Applicants will need to bring copies of their references and training portfolios or other evidence of competences and achievements
End-April 2007
  • Outcomes of interview/selection process are announced:
  • Selection outcomes will be communicated to applicants via MTAS, starting according to a national timetable
  • There will be a defined period within which candidates must accept or decline their offer
  • Unfilled posts will be identified and advertised for the second round of applications
May - June 2007
  • Second round of recruitment commences:
  • Very similar process to round 1 applications
  • Job details will be posted on deanery websites
  • Applications will be made via www.mtas@nhs.org.uk
  • Round 2 shortlists decided and announced via MTAS by end-May
  • Interviews will take place in June
  • Offers will be made via MTAS to successful applicants by end-June
August 2007 onwards Specialty training programmes start

Summary
  • Consider the specialty person specifications as soon as you can
  • Assess yourself realistically against the criteria
  • Think about your life choices: personal / partners / flexible training?
  • Work out which is most important: geography or specialty?
  • Think realistically about career options and choose the most appropriate level to apply to
  • Understand your aptitude and as far as possible, the competitiveness of the specialty you are applying for
