Bed-and-Breakfasts

American bed-and-breakfast inns (B&Bs) are usually more expensive than their European counterparts. Some are romantic or historic, while others are simple private homes.

Many cities have referral agencies or offer information through their visitor centers, and numerous guides to bed-and-breakfast accommodations are available.

Hostels, YMCA and YWCA

Hostels offer beds for US$5-22. For complete information, contact Hostelling International - United States of America (733 15th St. NW, Suite 840, Washington, DC 20005, Tel. 202-783-6161).

YMCAs (Tel. 800-USA-YMCA) and YWCAs (Tel. 800-YWCA-US1) offer safe, inexpensive accommodations, frequently with pools or gyms.

University Dormitories

Some universities rent beds in their residence halls in summer. The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE, 205 E. 42nd St., NY 10017, Tel. 212-661-1414), lists accommodations in their publication Where to Stay USA, or contact local visitor information centers
