NEW DELHI: The arrest of 42-year-old Ranjit Singh alias Kumar Suman Singh shows that perhaps no examination in the country is foolproof. Thanks to him, the country has thousands of undeserving doctors, engineers, MBAs and bankers.
Singh, a ‘‘qualified’’ doctor, could not tell his CBI interrogators what MBBS stood for.
CBI sources said Singh, the kingpin of the CAT paper leak scam unearthed on Sunday, was born in a poor family at Hilsa in the Nalanda district of Bihar. Today, he has property worth crores of rupees.
CBI sources said he made Rs 100 crore a year on the CBSE medical exam alone. ‘‘For MBBS, the rate was Rs 10 to Rs 12 lakh and for all- India medical PG, the rate was Rs 12 lakh to Rs 14 lakh (for surgery it was more and for anaesthesia it was less). CAT was only Rs 5 lakh. Engineering was around Rs 10 lakh,’’ said a source.
‘‘He was involved in fraud from an early age. Even at the matriculation level, he forged his age documents. He took the exam twice — the second time with a false age certificate showing him much younger. In 1994, he joined the MBBS course at Darbhanga Medical College.
‘‘Before Sunday, he had only one brush with the law. He was arrested in 1990 in Ranchi, leaking the All India Veterinary College examination papers,’’ said a source.
According to the CBI, he owns a pharma company in Mumbai which is called Radon (an abbreviation for Ranjit Don), two flats in Mumbai, a petrol pump and an LPG dealership in Delhi, a flat in Vasant Kunj, an export and import business to convert his black money into white, a shopping complex, a huge house at his native Hilsa and two palatial buildings in Patna.
Ranjit Don has always taken good care of his family. His main business partners have been his brothers and brother-in-law. ‘‘His younger brother Shravan Azad is an MBBS (1995 batch) from Patna Medical College. His sister Sulochna too is an MBBS (1997) from the same college,’’ said a CBI source.
Nagendra Singh, the husband of Ranjit’s elder sister, took care of the business in Bihar and Nagendra’s younger brother was also made a doctor,’’ the source added. According to CBI sources, Singh took ample precaution when he leaked questions to his clients. He took advance payments, kept the original certificates of the students, filled in the examination centre on the form on his own and the candidates had no idea from where they were going to appear. ‘‘He took the candidates to a new city and kept them in a hotel where they were given the photocopies of the question paper. Then a professional solved the question papers. The candidates were made to memorise the answers and then in the morning the papers were all burnt,’’ said a source.
Ranjit Don spent a lot of money on getting the question papers. ‘‘He had sources in the printing presses, post offices or bank lockers at the centres where the question papers were kept,’’ said a source.
My Comment : First seats were Increased in All India. Now atleast one racket has been busted.
That is good signs for AIPG 2004.
