Histopathology Part 2 examination

The examination takes place over three days. The scope of this examination includes elements of interpreting and writing reports on histopathological slides and gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytopathology. Although no candidate can fail on the basis of a single incorrect diagnosis being made on one (or more than one) case in cytopathology or histopathology, it is an absolute requirement that the candidate should reach 50% in each of these components of the examination to pass.

No matter how well a candidate does in other sections, failure to reach 50% on either of these two elements will lead to automatic failure of the whole examination.
Other elements may include: undertaking and demonstrating findings from a post-mortem examination; analysis of frozen sections; a simulated specimen ‘cut up’; reporting a series of ‘special stains’ (e.g. immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, tinctoral stains, etc.); ‘long cases’ involving synthesising multiple slides or cytopathology specimens and producing a report, and an oral (viva) examination.
