For trainees who wish to specialise in cytopathology three examination routes are possible:
· Part 1 MRCPath in histopathology followed by Part 2 in cytopathology
· Part 1 MRCPath in Cytopathology followed by Part 2 in cytopathology
· Parts 1 and 2 MRCPath in histopathology followed by the Diploma in cytopathology.
The requirements for each of the above stages in the examination process, and the structure of the examinations themselves, are as above and as follows:
Cytopathology Part 1 examination
This is exactly the same as the Part 1 in histopathology, with the one exception that paper 2 consists entirely of questions directed at assessing the candidate’s knowledge of diagnostic cytopathology, including the application of special techniques, and the role of cytopathology in breast and cervical screening programmes.
