Basic surgical training post appointments are made through open competition. These posts are advertised in the 'British Medical Journal’s' ('BMJ') careers section, 'Hospital Doctor' and on individual hospital websites.
If you wish to do your basic surgical training in the UK in order to obtain the CCBST, you will need to apply for approved training posts.
Basic surgical training is the period in a surgeon's career that follows the pre-registration house officer (PRHO) year, and precedes appointment to a higher surgical training programme as a specialist registrar (SpR).
A basic surgical trainee is known as a senior house officer (SHO) and will need to:
spend a minimum of 24 months (or the equivalent if they choose to train part-time) in basic surgical training (BST)
have passed all sections of the Intercollegiate MRCS/Collegiate MRCS/AFRCS Examination.
