Dentists in New Zealand provide oral health care for patients in all age groups.

Dentists are expected to be competent both as team leaders and as team members. Dentists
work in a variety of settings, including

· general practice
· community services
· hospital services
· specialist practice
· outreach programmes
· armed services
· university clinics.

The Dental Council of New Zealand is responsible for protecting the New Zealand public by
ensuring that all applicants for registration have sufficient knowledge and experience to practise
competently and independently in New Zealand. The need to maintain standards and to ensure
the safety of consumers is Council’s paramount concern.
