Oxford Handbook for the Foundation Programme (Oxford Handbooks S.)
Added on 15-07-2006
"The Oxford Handbook for the Foundation Programme" is the first book to be written for doctors on the new UK Foundation Programme. It has been written by junior doctors with specific reference to the different style of training offered by the new changes in postgraduate education. It is the most useful book you can carry during the critical first two years after medical school. As you start your job it will guide you through your on-call emergencies, day-to-day ward life and specialty attachments whilst helping you adapt to your career, get the most out of your job and choose a specialty. It contains the simple factual guidance you'd expect from an "Oxford Handbook". The clinical sections are arranged by symptom and have a clear, step-by-step format for the emergency management of your patients. This book gives you the best questions to ask for the history, tells you what to look for in examination, and guides you to the correct diagnosis and treatment. This presentation-based approach ensures you can offer the best treatment for your patients, whose diagnoses often aren't clear at first. A practical, ward-based approach is taken for common on-call problems - including sliding scales, warfarin dosing, and falls. The specialty sections range from A & E to urology, highlighting the important differences in approach, with a succinct guide to the management of common specialist conditions. Also covered are practical procedures ranging from cannulation to chest drains, outlining indications, equipment and the actual procedure. Wherever possible, hints for success have been included. Interpretation of investigation results includes the ECG, CXR and blood tests, providing a quick reference scheme invaluable for years to come. The book ends with the common drug doses that all doctors should know, but sometimes need to double check. "The Oxford Handbook for the Foundation Programme" also contains a non-clinical section tackling issues from interview technique to tax assessment. It includes all relevant addresses and website references to help you find the information you need. --synopsis, RxPG

Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties (Oxford Handbooks S.)
Added on 30-01-2006
This book together with the Handbook for Clinical Medicine is absolutely essential for survival on the wards. If you havn't got a clue what's wrong with the patient, what the consultant is talking about or what you are meant to do next- these books help you out. They are compact enough to stick in your pocket, but have enough information crammed in to tell you everything that you could be expected to know about any condition. As I said this is a must for any med. student or junior doc. The proof really is that these aren't some new fancy books that have to be put to the test now, everyone I've spoken to seems to have been using them for years- Good Luck! --reviewer, RxPG

Internal Medicine Subspecialties: Ultra-High-Yield Clinical Case Scenarios for USMLE Step 2: Internal Medicine Subspecialities (Platinum Vignettes S.)
Added on 30-01-2006
95% of Step 2 consists of clinical vignettes, and this exciting new review series presents a wealth of "guaranteed to be on the exam" clinical vignettes for Step 2 preparation to give the reader a clear-cut advantage. It is unique among case-based series in giving greater focus to high-yield information. The cases and accompanying images faithfully replicate the format of the case encounters presented in Step 2, and key points and important Step 2 "buzzwords" are highlighted for each case. The approach is simple and focused without leaving out any important information. Plus, the format gives readers the opportunity to guess the answer to the case before it is revealed and to postulate on which tests to order, what therapy to give and what to "watch out for" in the condition presented. --pankaj, RxPG

Oxford Handbook of Accident and Emergency Medicine
Added on 30-01-2006
This is a welcome addition to the Oxford Handbook series, which is so popular with medical students and trainee doctors throughout the English speaking world. As an overview or introduction to Accident & Emergency Medicine it is comprehensive in the topic areas it covers. It does not dwell on theoretical detail, but acts as a practical guide for students and junior doctors unsure of the initial assessment and management of common emergency problems. A criticism I would offer is that this book is lacking somewhat in detail in terms of the management of many conditions, offering the advice "refer to specialist" all to frequently. In a climate where emergency physicians are expanding their role, this may limit the use of this book in the near future. Overall, for the medical student or first time doctor in A&E, this is a very useful resource to have readily available. --synopsis, RxPG

250 Cases in Clinical Medicine (MRCP Study Guides)
Added on 30-01-2006
Each case is presented in the form of 'salient' feautures in the history, and the examination findings, followed by a question and answer discussion around the topic. The salient history is useful because it is often skipped by most of these case-based books like Ryder. The examination is presented in a kind of instructive way and not as a case record like with Ryder. The discussion questions are split into standard and advanced level questions. Many of the answers are extremely detailed and at quite a high level. They also include references to important literature. This is essential reading for MRCP candidates, and complements a standard medical text very nicely. But it won't specifically tell you what to say like Ryder does. It will however give you a more comprehensive review of each case compared to Ryder. The danger for undergraduate students is that they might become bogged down in the detail of this book and I would certianly recommend getting used to 'Medical Finals - Passing the clinical' as this is a highly useful and efficient means of revising for medical finals.
For the most part the book does lack pictures but uses them to good effect for the ophthalmology and dermatology sections. The pictures are fairly small but of a high print quality. --synopsis, RxPG

Essential Lists for MRCP
Added on 30-01-2006
This book is a fine adjunct for those studying for the MRCP. It is as comprehensive as you need it to be for the purposes of studying for this exam. McPherson is a well structured text which saves a lot of time during studying, by having this for reference when ploughing through detailed texts or multiple choice/true-false questions. Although at first glance this might seem more suited to the knowledge-based first and second parts of the MRCP, it is also handy revision material in conjunction with, for example, Ryder's Short Cases. The PACES section of the exam is now supposed to avoid an emphasis on encyclopaedic knowledge, but it is an excellent confidence boost to have a few well prepared lists up your sleeve. --glasgow, RxPG

Basic Medical Sciences for MRCP: Pt. 1
Added on 30-01-2006
This is an excellent book for undergraduate revision and I would particularly recommend it to students on accelerated 4yr medical courses.
This book covers the key preclinical themes that are covered at undergraduate level (although it misses pathology). The topics are covered in sufficient depth (although anatomy is more 'answers to key questions' rather than a sufficient guide in itself). It is well written and very good for exam revision. The reason I recommend it to medics on the 4yr course is that it is better as a memory refresher rather than as a first introduction to physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, etc.
