Obstetrics and Gynaecology: An Evidence-based Text for MRCOG
Added on 15-09-2007

This innovative text, modelled on the current MRCOG curriculum, provides all the information that senior house officers and specialist registrars in obstetrics and gynaecology will need during training and when preparing for the MRCOG examination. This book is divided into three Parts - General/Introductory, Obstetrics and Gynaecology - and sub-sections within these major areas are broadly based upon the elements of the curriculum that are highlighted within the RCOG trainee logbook. To ensure consistency of approach throughout the book, all elements within each Part have been written to a template structure. Each element opens with an introductory section of ‘MRCOG standards', highlighting the ‘Theoretical knowledge' and ‘Practical skills' relevant to the discussion that follows. Within the discussion, clear sub-divisions of the text under standardised headings ensure ease of reference. Each element concludes with a brief list of key references and a guide to essential reading as an aid to further study. Throughout the clinical elements of the text the supporting evidence for efficacy of the interventions described has been presented according to the guidelines of the RCOG. Recommendations for medical, surgical, psychological and complementary treatment and diagnostic tests are subject to this appraisal, a feature unique among obstetrics and gynaecology textbooks at this level. This textbook will fast become an indispensable guide to the specialty for all trainee obstetricians and gynaecologists in preparation for the MRCOG examination and beyond. --saji, RxPG

Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine (Oxford Handbooks)
Added on 07-03-2007

The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine covers all areas of internal medicine and provides rapid, on-the-spot access to evidence-based clinical management. Its characteristic style - combining incisive guidance with wit, a lucid style, and memorable epigrams - has been popular with generations of medical students and junior doctors the world over. There are a host of new features in this edition: new sections on common acute medical symptoms, and clinical skills; a new 'cheat sheet' on commonly used drugs; more colour plates, and more ECGs. There are numerous other updates and improvements throughout, many suggested by extensive market research. The pages have been redesigned in full colour. A new junior co-author has ensured that the text is just right for its market and tells medicine 'as it is'; and a panel of senior readers has approved every section. The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is an utterly reliable 'friend in the pocket', any time of the day or night! --Anita, RxPG

MCQs for MRCOG: A Self-assessment Guide: Pt. 1 (Hodder Arnold Publication)
Added on 19-01-2007

This book includes MCQs in the basic sciences that underpin the study of obstetrics and gynaecology, as is examined in Part 1 of the membership examination. Following the syllabus recommended by the RCOG, the questions are arranged in papers of 60 questions, each question having 5 stems with True/False answer options. Full answers with explanatory text will be provided. Where appropriate the answers will be supplemented by key message boxes and footnotes to direct further study - in this way the book can be used as a study guide as well as a tool for revision and self-assessment. A unique feature of the book will be the accompanying CD-ROM. Using this the candidate will be able to select at random questions to make up a practice paper which they can sit under 'examination conditions'. When the candidate has completed the mock examination the program will calculate their scores and indicate whether this would represent a 'good pass / pass / borderline pass or fail'. As with the text, full explanations of the answers will be provided. --saji, RxPG

Past Papers: MRCOG Multiple Choice Questions 1997-2001: Pt. 1
Added on 19-01-2007

The Part One MRCOG examination is a test of basic science knowledge as applicable to obstetrics and gynaecology. While the format of the examination (two papers each of 300 multiple true/false questions) has remained unaltered over the past two decades, the syllabus and mix of questions has undergone considerable updating. The trainees of today will experience a massive influx of scientific knowledge in their practice over a lifetime, and the examination aims to equip trainees as best possible to understand, interpret and apply new knowledge properly. This publication is a landmark in the history of the Part One MRCOG. For the first time, candidates are able to assess their chances of passing the examination. The members of the Examination Committee hope that this information will encourage candidates to sit the examination when they are ready, while discouraging those who are too early in their cycle of learning. This publication is a landmark in the history of the Part One MRCOG. For the first time, candidates are able to study real questions and to self-assess their chances of passing the examination. --saji, RxPG
