US may allow 5,000 more Indian doctors for residency training
By IANS, Jan 2, 2010 - 6:06:50 PM

New Delhi, Jan 2 - The US may allow in nearly 5,000 more Indian doctors for residency training every year, an American doctors' body said here Saturday.

Vinod K. Shah, president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin -, said he met US President Barack Obama and appealed to him to remove the present cap of 18,000 on residency training for US and foreign doctors.

'The case is now with a special committee and most likely to get a nod. The administration is planning to allow a total of 15,000 more doctors to do residency training in the US,' he added.

At least 30-35 percent of the additional doctors will be Indians, said Jayesh Shah, another AAPI member, adding : 'You can expect approximately 5,000 more Indian doctors getting this benefit in the near future.'

The doctors are allowed to practice in the US after residency training.

The US administration has put a cap of 18,000 on the number of doctors for residency training annually, of which 16,000 are local doctors. Out of the 2,000 doctors of foreign origin, Indian medicos have a share of 30 to 35 percent.

'Once the federal cap is removed, it will help many Indian doctors to specialize in new areas,' Vinod K. Shah added. Currently, over 61,000 Indian-origin doctors are working in the US.

Indian-origin doctors from America, Britain, Canada and Australia are currently in New Delhi to deliberate on several healthcare issues and devise ways to work with Indian counterparts in bettering the healthcare delivery mechanism.

Aim NEET PG

it's a good news for all who are desperate for going to us. but doubling residency seats will affect demand - supply ratio. so salary of doctors will decrease. salary is the major reason for most of doctors going to us. lets see what happens.

Aim USMLE Step 1

Yeah its just a speculation..

The coming of its effect may take a while

itsjusnobody
Aim USMLE Step 1

and regarding salaries.. it may not change

they are just talking about increasing residency seats, that doesnt necessarily mean they'll allow you to settle.

Its a mirage.
I have been getting interviews after passing USMLE since 2 yrs.
India is best.

so is it still in speculation or is it ruled now?

Aim USMLE Step 1

hmm.. the bill's been put into effect. The outcome mentioned in the first post can be expected. So, its good news for all aspiring for primary care residencies in the US.

As for the salaries, on the contrary they are increasing for PCPs as compared to the specialty groups. The badly hits are- radiology, cardiology. Surgery is still doing well.

From a personal point of view, radiology is pretty much a dying field since more and more docs are becoming increasingly competent in reading images etc., from my experience here. Its only a matter of time, before its over-run.

Aim USMLE Step 3

USMLE is quite expensive
Step 1 900 USD
Step 2 900 USD
Step CS 1400 USD
Step 3 800 USD
Plus many small small fees to finish verifications and all
Main thing is residency application, say around 100 application in 1 speciality will cost around 3000 usd
plus travel expense during interviews adds a lot
There is no guarantee of residency even after all these!

Aim USMLE Step 3

So choose wisely and best bet is not to try n go through all this pain as a sole target but finish ur residency in India first before thinking any foreign coutry

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE MRCP(UK) IS NOW RECOGNISED IN INDIA?

• MRCP(UK) is recognised by the MEDICAL COUNCIL OF INDIA

• You can get an equivalence certificate from the AP Medical Council

• MRCP(UK) is equivalent to completing MD(General Medicine)

• The MRCP(UK) is recognised around the world as a
hallmark of professional achievement. It is used in
countries outside the UK as a benchmark standard for
local postgraduate assessments.

• Each year, some 14,000 doctors take one or more
components of the MRCP(UK) examination in 26
countries worldwide.

• Wherever you have studied, the MRCP(UK) confirms you
have achieved the highest standards, conferring a clear
advantage in an increasingly competitive market.

• It is a qualification that is established and recognised
across the world. Every year over 1,500 doctors from
many different parts of the world successfully complete
the MRCP(UK).
