Author: vzxPostPosted:     Post subject: FAQ: Should I join Kaplan for USMLE? [#]

Hello folks.

I'm still preparing for my GRE exams which are due on 29th june, but am planning in advance for my USMLE's as well. I'm looking at 2009 residency and so have ample time with me to prepare. But i'm still in a dilemma. Should i join kaplan or not ?

I've gone through some heavy cerebration but still am not quite sure. Here are some of my P.O.V.'s

About Kaplan

Pro's

1. U are compelled to attend the 4hr lectures a day. That makes sure that u atleast study 4 hrs a day.

2. Regular exams keep u prepared with the subject

3. An environment of study, which is not possible in most college reading halls because of a wide variety of students studying for diff exams

Cons

1. The price... 73K is just too much

2. Only 1 way communication i.e. lack of interaction

3. Cant manage internships (9am to 1pm) with kaplan timings (4 pm to 8 pm) without getting fatigued.

=====================

About study at home

Pro's

1. Home atmosphere, can take a break at anytime unlike kaplan where breaks are also scheduled.

2. Can study acc to my own study schedule

3. Saves a lot of money (73K), for which i can buy myself a nice laptop and stuty kaplan notes and DVD's on the go (even in clinics)

Cons

1. Cant adhere to a strict schedule (atleast true for me, dunno about you ppl)

2. Home distractions and lack of a proper atmosphere

=====================

These are just my Point of views.. I'd like to know yours as well. And the final question is Should i join Kaplan or not ??

P.S. - I've kept a poll on this thread which will help some other ppl decide as well

Cheers

well im in a same dilemma ...so i didnt post anythin so far... but recently i read in other forum that a person got 99 studyin d kapln notes n dvds .. he had latest kaplan notes but old dvds ....
still he did it.
accordin 2 me it ll all depend upon ur MOTIVATION ....if u r motivated then no need to join i suppose.....off course wit complete notes ....
bye

Author: vzxPostPosted:     Post subject:

yes well... Motivation is not a problem. But sometimes study at home does not appeal to me. I've never ever studied at home for 3-4 hrs at a stretch.

I recently asked a few of ma friends who joined kaplan and even they're not sure if I should join kaplan or not... hehe... All of them give the same answer "It depends upon you".. What we need here is opinion of ppl who have actually taken kaplan classes and also given atlest step 1... So that we may find out if the classes are actually beneficial

Author: pepenePostPosted:     Post subject: FAQ: Are KAPLAN Lectures Sufficient for USMLE Preparation?

is the info provided on kaplan lectures sufficient for prep or do we need to read thru the notes completely for the exam?also where can i get the questions to practice for Step1/2?if anyone has any info kindly help..

Author: YogaPostPosted:     Post subject:

I wld say KNOW FIRST AID COLD ....Then, you can supplement w/ other stuff.

Author: pass_usmlePostPosted:     Post subject:

I would say that definately yes.....Kaplan notes are more than sufficient. And if coupled with the lecture DVDs then u have it all.
Agree with Yoga too that First Aid is very good. But it is a supplement to the Kaplan notes...not vice verse. u can pass by reading first aid but to score u have to use Kaplan notes.
My 2 bits...anybody please correct or add.

Author: sunilusaPostPosted:     Post subject:

where we will get kaplan books

Author: pass_usmlePostPosted:     Post subject:

The original ones from the Kaplan centres. Certain bookstores is major medical colleges offer photocopy of them. They are cheaper. ask ur friends. Tell me where are you from and I think someone will tell u where u can get the notes in your city.

reply

Author: vzxPostPosted:     Post subject:

Huge updates in 4 subjects..

Anatomy - Really Really Really HUGE update... The professor has been changed and this new guy is really good

Biochemistry - Once again Book+video both updated. But we dont study from kaplan.. For this subject only, we are taught from compass notes with corrosponding lectures by Dr. Barbera Hansen.. And if you ask me, her lectures are worth every penny that i spent for kaplan

Pathology - Yet to study, But i guess goljan will be the best. Dunno for sure, untill i actually view the lectures

Pharmacologym - Yet to start

I hope this helps... Al the other videos are the old 2004 videos only without any changes.. But if you have the 2001 editions, then you have the older versions... atlest get the 2004 videos

Then join Kaplan Bombay.. as simple as that... otherwise read tons of threads on this forum about where to get the pirated stuff... I'm all for the original books and stuff... Really helps all those ppl who took pains to write all this material. Plus the added advantage of updated lectures.

My 2 cents of advice: Join Kaplan if you've got the moolah

Author: sherly PostPosted:     Post subject: joining kaplan

i would definately recommend joining kaplan. the one thing that i have understood after talking to others is that : whatever you feel comfortable with you should do it. if you think that you should join, and that you are able to study, or that you r weak some where, then you should definately join it with out thinking twice.

i am also going to join it.

Author: sherly PostPosted:     Post subject:

sorry, that you are NOT able to study

Author: sherly PostPosted:     Post subject: kaplan lectures are excellent

i personally think that kaplan lecture notes and kaplan Qbank are excellent!! if it is possible take the course, if not, get the lectures note and the dvds any how.

Author: manipalguy PostPosted:     Post subject:

hey guys and specially vzx!!
I have all the kaplan notes but of the year 2004.
Does the latest editions have much changes. can i study from 2004 notes . do these editions changes every year.
where i can get the DVDs for kaplan. Thanks
waiting for a quick reply

Author: vzx PostPosted:     Post subject:

Latest edition have astronomical changes in the pahrmac, anat, micro and patho subjects. The rest boooks are re-print editions of the 2004 books.

Pharmac - Too many useless drugs deleted. (but then i studied from lippincot - and did not even touch the kaplan book, except for the mcq's)

Anat - Huge, Big, Big, Big changes in the books and the video lectures are pretty good too.

Micro - Boring across all the books. Basically have to mug up. Do it from kap, compass, whichever book you like to

Patho - Goljan Rulezz... Do not do it from anything else.

So there you go. You're not missing much except the updated video lectures in pharmac and anat + the general advantages of joining kaplan.

The ball is in your court now

cheers

yes i know alot of people who have joined kaplan . they are intellectual people and yet they had joined kaplan and got excellent score of above 90. it all depends on you also. on how well you study. see, it gives you a g8 environment to study

Author: vzx PostPosted:     Post subject:

Please enlighten us with the content contained in these "Other Kaplan DVD's"

I thought that the only kaplan DVD's available in the market are the ones that contain the Video Lectures.

@ Speedo

Well the Stuff that you have will only come in handy once you're over with your first reading... so stack 'em up somewhere safe for the time being. Regarding the Kap DVD's.. humm... I suppose they are available in every major city across india. Try searching near some copy (xerox) shops near your medical college. Ask your seniors, etc..

That's about all I can say without violating the TOS. This forum is strictly meant for helping out ppl to prepare - Not to guide you to some place where copyright infringment is taking place.

That said and done... If you've got the money, then go in for the actual original books available at your nearest kaplan center. Those guys deserve it for all the pains they took to create these books.

Cheers

@navz

Well congratulations for choosing USMLE.. i've know ppl who have wasted precious time in deciding what exam to give. So, now that you've made up your mind, Welcome aboard and start preparing.

Kaplan books and DVD's (or the original video lectures - Which ever you choose acc. to your convenience) would be sufficient for getting started. Wether you should read extra books or not, actually depends upon what kind of score range are you targetting.

Kaplan is sufficient for 80-90... but for that added advantage try reading other books... however there is no gaurantee that the actual exam may contains stuff from these other books either.

As a precautionary measure ppl do end up reading atleast BRS in physio, Goljan in Patho and High Yeild in Anat + First Aid... But read only the books that you are comfortable with.. Personally i did not like the format of High Yeild series and so did not read it..

Some ppl read these books during first reading, some while 2nd (i'm part of the latter). So how to go through these books is an individual choice... No one can guide you for that... Check out as many online forums as you can and go through some of these books and then decide what you want to read. Do not just blindly start reading acc. to recommendations by others

Cheers
