USMLE or Indian PG?
Hey guys! I m in 2nd MBBS and i m studying in India.
There has always been a confusion regarding whether to go for MLE or Indian PG.
Is it apt to prepare for both the exams simultaneously as i have heard that their patterns are entirely different.
Secondly, what are the advantages of MLE over Indian PG?
Thnx in advance.. icon_biggrin.gif

this question is the universal debate that has been discussed over and over again and again. you will find at least a hundred different answers to this all over rxpg forums.
USMLE pros :
1. much higher mean pay during residency , and afterwards very handsome pay packages
2. excellent work environment and work ethics
3. professional and cooperative attitude from everyone around you
4. very high chances to do substantial clinical and non clinical research.
5. U.S lifestyle of having affordable electronics, car, house, and all other first world facilities.
6. ability to invest a lot of money back home in india, as your purchasing power here will be quadrupled.
7. very clear and fixed syllabus for studying for exam. no ambiguous questions. no ridiculous journal based questions asked. analysis and reasoning are more important than cramming of facts.

USMLE CONS:
1. very very expensive undertaking. a lot of money needs to be initially invested without guarantee of a job/residency spot.
2. visa can be an issue if errors in documentation are there.
3. all or none phenomenon... in india you can get some seat if you get a decent rank...in USMLE its either matched or unmatched....no consolation prizes.
4. homesickness for those wishing to stay with family in india.
5. difficultly in coming back and adjusting to indian healthcare system after working here. also, the pay is not great here if you have a degree from there... you are paid the same as any other person in your respective specialty.
6. difficult to get surgical branches, and other high end branches such as radiology, ophthalmology, ent etc there. many of us have to compromise on branch to live in america.
7. complex pathway, with no simple straight forward exam-rank-counselling type system. lot of multiple factors are involved. apart from usmle scores, clinical experience in america, visa, research , publications, contacts over there and overall conduct and behavior, and good communication skills all play a very substantial role.

both exams are very very different in their basic approach to the subject. while the subjects are the same, you must remember that USMLE is NOT A COMPETITIVE EXAM AND THERE IS NO RANK.
if you do well, then you get a good score. also, the full syllabus of MBBS is distributed throughout 4 steps in USMLE.

but in indian entrances, every single question can make or break your rank. also the questioning style emphasises too much on cramming of a lot of facts. it doesn't truly test your clinical knowledge or acumen as a clinician.
USMLE will require you to change your approach itself to studying, concentrating more on core subjects and building a strong core, with a strong emphasis on graphs, diagrams, and applying basic sciences. every single question is a clinical scenario ( a vignette).

for indian exams, better to focus on mudit khanna, AA, vivek jain Q banks etc.
my strong advice is to stick to one and give max effort. this is because both have very very different styles of questioning and preparing for both will let you succeed in neither.

it all a matter of perspective
depends how u look at or what u want
do u want to live in india GETTING INTO pg in india then get ready to work hard soooo hard that.............

if u have financial backing and are hard "hard working" and u know some people in US that can connect u or someone that know some one kinda thing, u can get good references their and leaving India is no issue to u then take USMLE.........the finance become insignificant then cos u will definitely get a good income and after residency your value elsewhere will be double that of indian PG graduates of same field like middle east e.t.c (except in india)
